Tench

Hi Wayno

the tench are about to wake.

I have not tried yet but they are catcheable from early march onwards if the weather is kind. This year its been cold for a lot longer so they are just stirring. Of course in some waters they are caught all year.

In my local old natural gravelpits they start about now and can be easier to catch as natural food is short.

You do have to fish fine and with small baits generally. I favour caster chopped worm or pinkie.

good luck

Been trying for the last three days , blanked so far, a couple in my fish pond are feeding along with the gold fish, so hopefully it won't be long before they start feeding at the local pits.

I fish to live and live to fish.

Unfortunately been catching the odd one or two right thro' the winter, but most since Feb with water temps down as low as 39F.

Tench have always been thought of as an early season fish of warm water etc, but with the abolition of the old close season they are probably caught more in April/May than in the later months.

One I had a bout 3 weeks ago had a 18mm boilie stuck in its mouth (not hooked :) ) I probably reeled it in before it could finish swallowing the bait!

Method and small fruity boilies...

Yes I would agree with what Den said. One water I used to fish a lot would only see a mere handfull of tench (admitedly big though) caught during the season but when the closed season was abolished April would see carp anglers totally plagued by them! Some guys would be cathing more in one night than we would have seen all year.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

One of my mates caught 2 decent tench from a local lake in february.

There is all ways a chance of catching the odd one now but I like to wait to may time before targeting them on float tackle.

If you wanted to catch one now it might be a good idea to use scaled down carp tackle eg small boilies as some of the carp anglers catch the odd one at this time of the year.
