piking reels?

The 3500,4500,6500 were the origonal shape Baitrunner from Shimano.First hit the UK carp scene in the late 80's. Still available now new but with an A after the number! Expensive new but sensible priced second hand. Here is a link to a picture of a 4500A-

Main cosmetic difference is that the "A" models have ali spools the origonals were plastic and the modern versions have a better drag.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

YOU WOULD BE BEST JUST BUYING THE BEST IN THE FIRST PLACE A COUPLE OF SHIMANOS SECONDHAND AROUND £45 EACH ISH YOU WONT REGRET IT THEY WILL LAST YOU YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS I COULD GO ON BUT JUST TO ADD I THINK THE NEW SHIMANOS HAVE GONE DOWN THE PAN FOR BUILD QUALITY

THE OLD ONES ARE BETTER BUILT

Thanks for all the advice,

I think i will stick to a fixed spool reel, as although i do lure fish, i also spent just as much time floatfishing or static deadbaiting, so i think i will stick to what i know.

Im going to have a look at the okuma epix pro, maybe the daiwa regal, and compare to the old shimano baitrunner.

thanks.

aahh river pike....i fish rivers for pike alot,

two reels that have stood up to the rigours of river piking are my old shimano baitrunner RE6000- had it for nearly 3 years and its still going strong, not one thing gone wrong with it and it looks the nuts in

"real mud" camou

the other is an abu garcia 303fr, nice little reel, double handle, metal not plastic body, get two spare spools, one aluiminium one plastic, one for braid one for mono :) recommended highly, lastted longer than i thought it would and it can handle good fish, has a decent front drag that works!

a baitrunner reel is not completly necessary but they come in very usefull,i often fish my rods on floats, tip up high, one front stick n alarm no rear drop offs etc as i travel light, teh freespool or baitrunner function is exactly what you need so you can tighten down yet still give on a take, river pike are not that fussy or bothered by ressistance.

Like Brian, I'm a fan of the DAM free spool reels. When DAM closed down I sold mine thinking that spares might be a problem. I replaced them with the new Shimano Baitrunners, but found their handling inferior. Then I found that DAM were still trading in Germany and so promptly bought some more secondhand ones and sold the Shimanos. I can't comment on the current front drag DAM free spool reels though as I've never used them.

Having tried many makes of reels over the years I'm happy with DAM and Shimano. My DAM Finessas have also given me sterling service, whilst for lure fishing (that wears a reel out more quickly) I use Shimanos.

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.

If GOD had NOT meant us to go fishing, WHY did he give us arms then??

(If you can't help out someone in need then don't bother my old Dad always said! My grandma put it a LITTLE more, well different! It's like peeing yourself in a black pair of pants she said! It gives you a LOVELY warm feeling but no-one really notices!))
