I would fish in a small pond with probably the middle tip to start with. Reel line? Personally I would use a 5Lb reel line and fish with whatever hooklength I thought was approriate. But probably start with a 3.2lb bottom. Hooks?? Again a very personal thing, but certainly NOTHING less than a size 18 be it whatever style.

I personally prefer to use the feeder a lot nowadays having had a lot more success over the years. And again this can be a nightmare regarding type of feeder, and more importantly bait in the feeder. But you will not go too far wrong using a sample of your hookbait in the feeder.

Another thing is attatching the feeder/hook link. I personally tend to either use a three way swivel in a size 12 (BLOODY hard to find!) or I put a small clip swivel on the line and then tie a loop of around 12" with the swivel in the loop and connect a piece of shock elastic to the swivel/feeder. And then make hooklength whatever length it needs to be able to connect with fish. In summer it would normally be longer and in cold weather make it shorter is a good rule of thumb as fish will NOT want to expend energy looking for food.

Hope this is some help?? And hope the session is a good one!! Let us all know how you get on and DON'T forget the camera!!!!

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.

If GOD had NOT meant us to go fishing, WHY did he give us arms then??

At right angle to your bait and as close to the water as possible is usual. Make sure either you are using sinking line, or the line sinks. Easiest way is to add a few drops of fairy liquid to the spool before going fishing.

As to the fishing, was the pond ALIVE with fish?? Was everyone filling there boots?? I suspect the answer is no? And that you are probably doing right just need to build a swim and fish it when the fish

are more likely to feed.

Good luck

This is are my rules of lines when legering

For light legering for small fish at short range - up to 15yards I use 2lb

Light legering up to 15 yards for medium fish like 1lb+ fish then I go slightly heavier rating of main line of 2.5lb.

Legering up to 30 yards for small fish or meduim fish then it is 3lb mainline.

legering beyond 30 yards for fish up to 3lb+ then it is 4lb.

Casting 1/2oz weight will be 3lb mainline

Casting 1oz weight will be 4lb mainline

Casting heavy swimfeeder over 2oz then it is 5lb

but fishing for big tench, carp, and barbel then it is up to 8lb mainline.

Use washing up liquid on the main line, applied by running through a sponge containing the liquid when you retrieve also help to take away the grease that cause the line to float. This will help to sink the mainline quicker.

Use forged hook in various sizes as size 18 hooks up to size 12.

Hooklenght can be anything from 1lb line to 4lb line or above.

But the main goldern rule always hold your rod ready because if you are targeting the big fish, otherwise you will see the rod going into the water!

Growing old is inevitable but growing up is optional

It depends on what fish you're targeting and what methods you're using. A quiver rod is probably the wrong choice if it's the 20lb'ers you're after, though you could land them.

Most (all?) quiver tip rods are quite light compared to specialist carp rods that are designed for the bigger carp and casting heavy loads. Quiver rods have light tips designed to register even delicate bites. Think about it - it's daft to try to cast a monster method feeder on a standard quivertip that will be bent double with the effort of just holding the feeder in mid-air, let alone casting.

My two penneth worth-

Use the lightest tip you have.Keep the rod at 90degrees to the bait.Use either a maggot feeder with maggot hookbait on a size 16 or 14.I would reccomend a 4-5lb reel line with a 1.7 hook length.Alternatively use an open end feeder with groundbait and maggots.

Which ever feeder method you use the secret is to cast regularly ensuring its to the same spot every time. This will build up an area of food that will atract the fish.

Try looking at some of the basic feeder rigs on the AN rig page-

If it's windy and you find that your tip is bouncing about making bite detection difficult then you can get a little contraption that clips over your rod blank, say 1/2 to 2/3 rds up it with a quiver tip that slots in it so it sticks out at an angle from your rod. Your line goes through your eyes as normal but also goes through the eye on the contraption, you reel your line in causing the contraptions quiver to bend slightly inwards to your rod and you'll never miss a bite. Actually it's much easier than watching the end of your rod, when you get a bite the added quiver tip bends straight over to your rod (brilliant bite detection). I know I've not explained it very well but maybe someone else can, I don't know what it's called either so maybe another member can tell you.

I forgot to mention that you can fish with your rod pointing straight at your bait with this device.
