I have 10 Adult koi carp in my pond, 2 are Bronze, the rest are Harliquins.They are all fully scaled so, could someone please shed some light on how, out of 5 babies, 2 have distinctive Linear Carp markings? I wait with MUCH interest!!!!

Koi pick up colour and distinctive markings from previous generations in an almost random fashion. A single brood will therefore rarely have common traits such as colour, colour distribution or even scales. Its a bit of a lottery.

As Argyll pointed out, previous generations will have a big influence on future generations. The reality is, that although common scaling is the strongest gene, Linear mirrors can crop up anywhere. Even in the wild, the mirror scaling can crop up in the Carp family, I believe its called the Mendelian factor.

 

I seem to remember Kev Clifford showing a photo of a wild Rudd with mirror scaling in one of his books. How good looking would that be, A linear scaled Rudd!!
