Burton Bradstock - West Dorset

FearTheHands

Recommended Posts

I am moving to Burton Bradstock, Dorset in a couple of weeks & would like to make contact with anglers in the area, West Bay, W Bexington, Abbottsbury, Weymouth etc who can point me in the right direction of good local marks & maybe hook up with for a few angling sessions & a pint or two every now & then.

Are there any locals who can point me in the right direction ?

I'd also like to have some boat fishing trips as well, so maybe there are a group of people who have room for 1 more ? :D

At Burton, you are at the shallow end of the beach.

The grit-size shingle is a nuisance but the place has always been known for bass.

I've only fished it seriously a couple of times. I had a bass of about 5lb first time.

There are some rocks there somewhere, under the cliffs I suspect.

The other side of West Bay is also good!

Its Lyme Charmouth and Seatown for me in the summer, spinning for Bass, cant beat it!

Cogdon used to be a good spot for flatties and the odd cod, havent been there for a few years tho.

Nice village Burton, good pub as I remember!

Ps I think by the other side of West Bay he means Eype!

If you can get hold of a little dinghy and outboard it'll improve your options no end, easy launching at West bay and Lyme, off the beach at Charmouth.

Thanks for all your replies :)

I'm especially interested to hear that Eype can be good bass ground as I was there last week checking it out & fancied giving it a shot

One of the 1st things I want to do is to get a small boat with an outboard on it, so I'm looking forward to that.

Yes, Burton has 2 good pubs which I will have to walk past to get back home - it's a hard life!

Has anyone tried fishing the new harbour @ West Bay ?

I think there are some rules about fishing the harbour, (float only I read in another post). There used to be good mullet there where the river runs in, but havent seen the new harbour or tried fishing for them since I was a kid! (never caught any but they were quite big at the end of the summer months!) I prefer launching from Lyme, friendly harbourmaster and RNLI nearby should the need arise! Car parking at both can be a bit of a prob in the summer hols but the fishing wakes up in march and goes on until Nov when i give up to paint the boat and warm up!. The old west bay harbour was a bit tricky to negotiate in a swell as the sea funnelled between the walls, made for a lively entrance! that should be cured now.

Heres the sign, mind you there were plenty of people ledgering with one report of a few bass about. Ok to ledger at night when the boats are back is the word on the quay!

This is where the mullet hang out, where the river joins the harbour, think theres a no fishing sign there but maybe ok in the evening. Sorry about the quality it was nearly dark.

Dan, thanks for posting the pics. I also read the signs while I was there.

There were 3 people fishing from where I took these pics before ledgering into the harbour as they'd discovered a loophole. You are not restircvted from ledgering frm the end of the new stone pier, so they just cast 100 yards into the harbour!! Works for me! I'm sure they'll soon stop that though.

The other pity is that the new "car park" near the launch ramp will only be a trailer park & not for public parking according to one of the construction workers

Yes, your pics are indeed massive! :D

Check your email, I've resized them & emailed them to you

I'm assuming there is a charge to launch at West Bay ?

Offical opening by Prince Andrew next week I hear! It costs me about a £5 to launch at Lyme (mines a 15 foot dinghy) I guess West Bay will be about the same, the slip way looks a bit steep though. I'll syick to Lyme! its closer to home for me anyway.
