I looked into this about 8 years ago. The market for fishing gear is very competitve and the best prices I found were from malasia. Its a country thats easy to do business with as most ppl speak english and there are no import restrictions atm apart from on the packaging they send it in ..You would need to be prepared to pay up front before anyone will export , but the savings are huge.

Another option is to contact china direct where most stuff comes from anyway. The problem there is communication and you would have to deal thru an agent as arranging export licenses is impossible otherwise. The prices are unbelievably cheap there but its a hard country to trade with.

Good luck with your plans...to deal with a uk importer is an easy option...but the margins are limited in a cut throat market...to import directly is far more profitable but for the beginner is a deadly minefield!

Got that feeling myself.Just looking around ebay at prices convinced me it would be difficult to make a go of it. One guy sells terminal tackle less than half price of my local shop and everyone local thinks that shop is dirt cheap.

have a look at

http://www.globalsources.com

This is a central site for accessing far-eastern (& other) suppliers of EVERYTHING. just search for "fishing" and it'll throw stuff at you. I used to use it when I was in the electronics business - it was just a magazine out of Hong Kong then - and it's amazing. Many of the manufacturers will supply you with samples if you're prepared to pay the shipping/postal costs. But they're not mugs!

From personal experience I'd say that starting out in the import/retail business is very tough. I'd guess that the way to go would be to identify one product type that interests you, and to specialise in it initially. Otherwise the cost of stock will be frightening... Be prepared to hang in for at least two years before you start to see worthwhile results.

Let me know what you think.
