Mah Jong / Mahjong

Oh Joy at last my boat comes home!!!!!

No, sorry I do not and cannot play the game BUT.......................

I asked a freind to buy me a nice wooden (boxed) version of the game when he visited Thailand a couple of years ago. I paid very little for a VERY high quality product and gave it to my wife as a Birthday pressie. She also was well impressed but there was one problem, the instructions were in Thai and there was no English translation. Neither of us speak Thai and do not know how to play the game so it's been under the coffee table untouched for ages.

Do you have a set of instructions (English) that you could let me have or point me at a good web site where I can download them????

This is BIG browny points for me, can't wait to see her face.

Try the above link- It has a nice simple breakdown of the rules- Although as it says their are loads of variations to the game- I personally play the version where you can CHI/CHOW as times as you wish as it allows you to hold or move the east wind when tou get out

For the singapore version which includes animals(not included in chineese version, thai I don't know)

and finally the version I play

Good luck, it seems complicated but once you get to grips with the rules and scoring its an absolutly brilliant game

I recommend "The Complete Book of Mah-Jongg" by A.D.Millington

Orion Publishing Group. Paperback 1991

Gives history, rules, several different versions, and tactics.

Try a few on-line book sites.

I went to mahjongtime.com and ended up playing 7 games yesterday. Really good fun and it seems a nice bunch of people go on there, no slagging off people in the chat window etc. All polite and mainly about getting on with the game.

Was delighted when I won 1 game with the special hand of 1 to 9 of bamboos and 1 of each wind.

Shame I lost all the others. Came close a few times, and would have won another if I realised I could have multiple chows in winning hand if all the same suit.

Good fun anyway, you should give it a try.

If anybody wants to learn mahjong, the site has a help section that takes you through the games rules.

Enjoy!

Thanks guys, wifey'll be over the moon. Just ordered book so "Brownie" points galore on the way to me, must be at least 24 hours on-bank time, brilliant.

Cheers - Phil
