pin question

when spooling up a pin, should backing be put on before the main reel line? if so how much? currently my pin holds 100 yards of mono with no backing.

There is no need to put any backing on your centrepin reel. I use wide drum Aerial reels for Carp fishing and have had no problems with bedding in, however, should you be using your reel for trotting, you may experience "jerking" as the line is pulled off the reel by the float, particularly after landing a fish. So, if it is to be used for trotting, Andrew's suggestion of between 50 and 70 yards should be fine, unless you happen to hook a Barbel......................

yeah i only use the last 40-50 yards but the 100 yards gives me some security in case of a barbel or big fish. theres no bedding problem as ive got no backing on and the mono is a low diameter line, that even with 100 yards bearly covers the spool, hence my question of backing.

Backing would rather defeat the point of only putting on a short length of line to avoid "bedding in".I only use a short length of mono 50m maximum on my pins and despite having caught 20lb carp (2lb mainline) and 8lb barbel (fast swim on the Severn 4lb main line) never been "spooled" Take a realistic look at how far you trot and then add on how far a fish actually runs, its no where near as far as most think.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

bedding in on centrepins is like line twist on open faced reels,it cannot 100% be avoided, you can lessen the chances, use less line ect avoid a uniform line lay when you pool your reel with line, when spooling up try to divert the line across the spool instead of concentric lines all parallel

re-spool your line inbetween trips (wind off then back on) or let all your line run off on a run through and wind it back on again,i've only ever used backing when fishing with braid but that was to prevent slippage, not really suffered with bedding in sometimes get a bit after a big fish but just let it run out and wind back on.like i said its like line twist some people suffer with it more than others do.
