Don't know how it will work in the UK but household ammonia is pretty specific to this algae. Doesn't take much (I don't know the exact amount per acre/ft) and you could protect a relatively small area (?). (works in Texas ponds [kinda]

Edit: after I posted I got to thinking - adding a chemical treatment may be illegal in the UK - better check before experimenting (or someone on the forum may know)
