Which plugging rod?

Hello

Can anyone recommend a good rod for bass plugging when using lighter lures like Rapala j13's(18g)

I use a carp rod for most of my spinning (with 1oz spinners) but this is a bit to much for plugs.

I use a Predetor Pike lure rod 9ft.

Casts 40/60 grm, great rod, nice action, plenty of guts.

Just a thought.

I use a cheapish, 10ft Abu Equaliser it casts 10-40 grams, I been using for about four years now and have had an 8Lb Bass on it, I must admit it took a bit of handling. It' a bit of a trade off, a rod light enough to cast a light weight lure but with enough backbone to handle a decent fish.

I use an 11ft shakespeare 'Tetra spin', does alright.

I have seen a Abu Enticer 10 ft rod 15-40grammes cw. that looks pretty good for the money.(£37)

Would this be up to bass plugging?

Yes, I'd say it would be alright.

 

You need a rod that will cast these light lures, that's the most important part. I use a little 7ft Shakespeare spinning rod that I bought in the states. It casts a 12 gram plug plenty far enough with a small fixed spool reel and 6-8lb line, and is great fun with a fish on.

 

Don't get fooled into thinking you need anything special to go plugging for bass. Just use what works.

Just been offered a 2nd hand 11ft carp rod that casts 1-3oz and has a test curve of 3lb.Is this too stiff to cast a 18g J13 Rapala effectively?

I think you'll find it a bit heavy really, 18g is only just over half an ounce and probably won't load the rod enough.
