looks like the heavy fishing on prawns may have took its toll

According to the latest the prawn fisherie is in trouble this could be due to the intense fishing on nerdrops down the northeast coast over the last year.

The smaller vessels which normally have a good living on prawns must now be haveing a hard time and have been complaining about the larger triple riggers putting to much pressure on the fisherie.

I wonder what they'll move onto next? The next series of Trawlermen should be interesting!

They are already working on it - Squid

The demand for Scottish "calamari" is growing in Europe, but little is known about the stock dynamics, see

http://news.scotsman.com/topics.cfm?tid=15&id=47652007

Why is demand growing in Europe for a product that really doesn't exist yet ?

Perhaps it's because their stocks are just about exhausted.

Perhaps it's because Scotland is willing manage fisheries without worrying about discards ?

The following are quotes from people who thought to write to the paper :

First the herring, then the cod, then the monkfish, how long will it take to fish out the squid?

We've managed to wipe out every other viable fishery. Now it's the turn of the squid. Let 'em have it boys!!!

We are a sad and desperate species.

Squid supper anybody? Plnety salt n vinegar for me please and a wee drop broon sauce!

It must have collapsed fast, because I went with commercial boat fishing for prawns the week before last and it hadn’t collapsed then?

There doesn’t seam to be any reports of any collapsing of a fishery here too. But plenty of reports of bad weather.

http://www.seafish.org/sea/blog.asp

They have had a bit of poor weather here too.

http://www.fishupdate.com/news/fullstory.p...industry__.html

It does not surprise me anymore how people can jump on a bandwagon of misinformation that has less foundation than the public bar it was transmitted across.

As for fishing for squid? They have been doing it for years. Again things taken totally out of context to support there theory’s on commercial fishing.

regards.

Yeah, just another chance for the “commercial bashers” to have a go.

As a friend of mine used to say in similar circumstances, “Consider the source.”

hi John, could you please state why after spending so many years in the recreational angling business (relying on there catches as part of a strong foundation for your business) have I ever yet to see or hear you attack a (commercial fishermen) industry that you took apart in for so many years.

Regards.

John the biggest boat in our fleet give it a go the other day and said it was shite and have now changed onto codling fishing.

Whether its the weather maybe maybe not but skippers have said they struggled to catch prawns but it is not just a few skippers who asy they have become scarce, but on the other hand what has been took off the prawn grounds this year its a wonder there is anything left to crawl it has had a liitle bit of hammer wouldnt you say.

As you say I have spent many years catching fish in one way or another and the job and the sea have been good to me. I don’t see why RSA and commercial fishermen should be enemies. They are in the main good people just going to the sea or the shore to make a living or enjoy their chosen sport.

In my opinion, the enemy are the people who do not think they have the right to do and enjoy this. The people who over the last thirty-odd years have ignored this right, neglected this right, mismanaged this right - the same people who are systematically destroying this country.

Big cod.

You would make a good reporter for the daily sport.

Just because one or two boats report that the prawn fishing was scarce one day, does not mean that the bottom has fallen out of the fishery because of over fishing as your thread title suggested.

Today’s concentration of boats on prawns is no where near what is twenty years ago.

There are a lot of big boats prawning but there’s no where near as many boats as there was.

People search the internet and look for dramatic headlines to discredit commercial fishermen. Simply because that’s all they can do.

A lot of people on here will only believe what they want to believe and will jump on this bandwagon at every chance. The chance for them to discredit commercials for something like over fishing because of assumptions made from public bar banter is not doing anybody any favours.

John and Michele.

Thanks for that, I agree with what you say. I must also add that it’s quite easy to criticize something that you know nothing about. Except some off the inaccurate information that fly’s about and is clutched at and used regardless of its foundation.

Regards.

So twenty years ago there were a lot more boats and fishermen (we all can agree on that) now i would like to know (as you are such an expert) in your opinion, if that same amount of boats of twenty years ago was still fishing using todays better technology and un regulated do you think they would be capable of over fishing these prawns? cheers...........
