Alrite lads, completely forgot about this post, i haven't had chance to put all your excellent advice into use but I sure will next time i am on the bank, and the worm approach is something I will definately be trying, but the spinning setup is something i can't do because i am young, naive and unfortunately stuck for cash, but i will invest in a spinning rod in the future.

Thanks again for all your advice.

gingerangler - watch this forum because within the next few days I'll be posting a new article and asking for comment, suggestions, etc. It will deal with using soft plastic lures (rubber worms) for UK shore angling and at least one technique is ideal for the more usual long, fixed spool rods so unless you are pole-only, you can read all about ways to lure fish for not much expense and with the gear you already have.

I've tried loads of them and to be honest, nothing can whack a Size 1 "Mepps" type spinner in Silver, Gold or Bronze.

That was a superb piece of perch-lore Andy, I found myself nodding agreement with almost every sentence, and my most vigourous nodding was at the one sentence I have quoted.

Just one query - why do you suggest "moving on if scrambling and wading are required" ?

Congratulations on an excellent post.

Cheers.

With regards to wading, I reckon you simply ruin your chances of catching a big perch. Big perch are spooky by nature and unlike Pike or trout, they tend not to reappear for quite some time, preferring to simply move elsewhere, sometimes for whole days at a time.....or so it can seem......

As far as climbing and scrambling around is concerned, it's inherently dangerous, it can make you quite conspicuous and it slows you down if you're following a shoal. Even something as simple a fence has lost me a shoal. I've been on top of them for hours at a time, constantantly checking the shoal perimeter and something comes along to ruin that ability for you. It only takes a minute to lose a shoal. I nice even bank everytime for me. That way, I can simply crawl or keep low whilst checking for fish with the float rod. If you're jammy enough, you can keep on top of a roving shoal all day.
