reccomendations at to what rod and reel would be in this price brackett or should I go for a beginners kit?. Also is there a rod just for float fishing i have seen a few for carp fishing.

Cheers Phil.

I've now ammended my first post to include the links to previous discussions on this topic.

Carp rods do tend to dominate the market as does camo gear - its the fashion.

Again something like a John Wilson Avon Rod would be good starter.

It has two tips one for quiver tip/leger/feeder fishing and one for float.

Several people here have recommended the Drennan specialist duo over the JW.

there are some Ron Thompson Avons on Ebay for 1/2 price - £30

I've just bought one

I couldn't agree with you more on that one Peter.

OI OI,

I couldent agree more i do use local tackle shop's but the one i & my mates use has just put 15% on anything to do with carp cos he knows that is what we all fish for in summer so he has gone the distance & have found another that gives us 10% dicount just because of the club were in not bad.

Personally I am growing increasingly wary of local tackle shops, they tend to want to sell what they have in stock rather than what I want

I have to say that I can't fault my local tackle shop, Padiham Angling Centre. I went in there as a complete novice last summer, and have had nothing but good advice and good, reasonably priced equipment. I didn't have a clue what I needed, and I could so easily have been ripped off, but they've been excellent right from the start.

They've never tried to sell me just what was in stock. Several times I've mentioned something, and rather than trying to sell me something from stock, Steve has handed me catalogues to browse through, and has ordered stuff for me.

Although I look on the Internet for information and new bits and pieces, I'd rather pay more and buy locally, knowing that I can see and handle equipment before I buy, and know that they will sort any problems quickly.

Besides, the Internet doesn't welcome you with a smile and a "Hello Jan, fancy a brew?" The Internet doesn't know where's fishing well, who's catching, what baits are doing the business.
