i'm afraid its a sign of the times ,health and safety based on historical evidence from a little jack horner made sticking thumbs in pies highly dangerous so this is the cleaned up PC version today :(

the cup next to it is for vinegar (there should be a brown paper pole as well) incase the plums still hot and water needs to be fetched from a well strangely situated atop a hill! to cool it.

First time Ive seen one as well.It looks like its made from foam so it could be a bouyancy aid for the "floating pole" technique or as its so bright it may be a feeding sight aid as you sugest.I would be interested in knowing as well! Have you tried on the more match/pole orientated sites as well?

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!
