i'm just starting with the freshwater side of fishing. jeez how do you lot take it all in and remember it. there seems to be soooo much to learn. i've been sea fishing for many a year and i've now decided to branch out a little more and not be so one-eyed with my fishing.

i know nothing of the practicalities of coarse fishing, the EA rod licence, fine,ok (but £24.50!!!!) how do you know if the river you decide to fish is then covered by an angling club, where you then have to pay for a day ticket, how do you find this out, local tackle shop ??

is how to improve your coarse fishing magazine a good source of info for complete beginners? i only know what matt hayes and john wilson have taught me via discovery real time.

cheers gareth.

Hi Gareth,

as someone who has been fishing for only 3 years now, i have found IYCF to be invaluable - I can also recommend the Angling Times. Your local tackle shops are a great source of information for details on rivers, lakes etc, and will let you know about day tickets and how to get them.

regards,

Ian

Where abouts are you Gareth? It would be nice if someone on here could take you out and show the ropes! I'd be more than happy to do that if you are close to Oxford!

yes first stop local tackle shop for info about venues .

then ofcourse you will have to decide what type of freshwater angling your going to be doing

A very generous offer from the good Doctor. He's right, a day fishing with an experienced angler is worth a hundred hours reading magazines and watching videos :)

my fault, should have mentioned i'm living a couple of miles north of Cardiff. 500 yards from the river taff, i know this part is day ticket - £4, from M4 bridge into cardiff bay, (for the locals).updated profile a bit now, well, as much as it will let me. bought h.t.i. coarse fishing today, gulp!! lots more to it than i thought. sea fishing is a big bait and hit and hope kind of thing. don't really mind catching anything, apart from trout and salmon they're under enough pressure without my feeble attempts at catching them. lol.

i have some lighter gear, the TF matt hayes float fishing kit is on order, i possess a 2 1/2lb test curve carp rod, an 11ft bass/estuary rod and a couple of small spinning rods, so i think i'm pretty covered to start with there, i think !!! match/quiver type rod required ???

local tackle shop it is then, bend their ears with some sensible and no doubt, some stupid questions.

thanks all. especially for the invite
