Server Help Needed

Elton

Recommended Posts

I have to move some sites from one server to another, fairly quickly.

I am not great with shell access, but figure that this will be the easiest way to go.

Can anyone explain in easy terms how to zip up a mySql database on one server and then unpack it onto another?

There will be more questions to follow :(

I managed to just about get one done, I think, using a programme called bigdump.

Is there an easy way to move files from one server to another, whilst maintaining their permissions?

you could ftp direct from one server to the other, or zip them and then ftp, which would be quicker than ftp'ing lots of individual files

don't suppose you have cpanel or similar do you? lots of that type of control panel has a transfer function allowing a very easy process

If you transfer them and lose permissions it is fairly easy to set permissions using chmod and or chown if you also need to change the owner...

Hi Nick,

I have Cpanel on the new server. I have some weird crap on the old one LOL

I'll try the server to server ftp first to see if that works.

I've got a few to move by the 22nd July :(

I see what you mean with regards to Cpanel now - that would have been bloody handy, if the old server had used it!

It's the databases that scare me - seems you have a million boxes to tick, yet every one must be selected correctly :D

elton, zip 'em first, it will be MUCH quicker

login to the server, get to the parent folder of the folder you wish to zip and then type:

tar -cjvf site.tbz site/

site.tbz being the name of the file you wish to create

site/ the name of the folder to zip

you could do all the sites in one hit!

or each one individually :)

Let me know if that doesn't make sense and I'll try and make it easier :)

If you would rather have a windows tool to do the mysql stuff there is a nice one which sits on your pc and then runs the commands remotely - works a treat :)

And there's also a nice wysiwyg client to do stuff using SSL I'll dig around in my archives and get the details :)

Cheers, Nick. I'll try those.

I *think* I've got most of it sussed now. It's just a case of getting the files across, making sure the permissions are right, changing any paths and importing the MySql data.

Trouble is, as you well know, it will only take one missing fullstop to screw all that up :D

Hi Nick,

Server to server ftp'ing is not preserving the file permssions, so I've tried the zipping above, but keep getting the following:

tar: dan.tbz: Cannot open: Permission denied

tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

public_html/

public_html/index.htm

public_html/travels.htm

public_html/anabel&.htm

public_html/mike.jpg

Broken pipe

Any ideas?

I'm navigating to one above the public_html folder and then typing:

tar -cjvf dan.tbz public_html/
