Diesel Outboard Engines

I spoke to a mate lately who is having a diesel outboard fitted to his new boat. Has anyone got experience of these modern ones? Are they any better than petrol ones?

From those 'in the know' diesel outboards were heavy and inefficient, a diesel inboard with a shaft or Z drive is much better. The new four stroke petrol outboards are superb, fuel efficient, reliable and eco friendly, the only downside is the road tax on petrol also applies to outboards in the UK, not so in all counties abroad, hence their popularity outside the UK.
