Diesel Outboard Engines

I spoke to a mate lately who is having a diesel outboard fitted to his new boat. Has anyone got experience of these modern ones? Are they any better than petrol ones?

Not a lot of help but the a lot of the fish farms up here used to use them a few years back, they have all switched back over to Honda four strokes now.. I think that kinda tells you something :)

Hmmmm....That term, "Honda four stroke", keeps cropping up :)

I could find very little on the diesel outboards on google, apart from a few small ones for sale. Nothing on the larger ones, which is kind of off-putting

It's the 27hp Yanmars that I keep finding in searches. Info on the larger engines seems non-existent :(

I think the 27hp yanmar was the biggest diesel outboard you could get. But I stand to be corrected. Modern 4 stroke outboards from people like Honda and Suzuki are head and shoulders above the previous generation outboards. They are much more fuel efficient, very reliable and built better for salt water. trouble is they are also ££££££'s

when i was in ireland about 15 years ago there were some hire boats, orkney 19's with 15 horse diesel outboards on them, can't remember the brand.

the guys who were using them complained that they were slow, noisy, a lot of vibration and everything on the boat was covered in a thin layer of diesel possibly from the exhaust.

you could certainly hear them coming from quite a way away, took them over an hour sailing to get to where we got to on our planing hulled boats in 15 minutes

Unbearable, isn't it? The suffering of strangers, the agony of friends. There is a secret song at the center of the world, and its sound is like razors through flesh.

Hi Elton

My pal just bought a pair of second hand yanmar 27's They probably weight four times an equivalent petrol outboard and cost £18,000 each when new. The cowel on them is twice the size of my 70 HP

The amazing thing is the fuel economy. They burn just 3 litres (not gallons) an hour. Because of the weight and price they are not practical on anything but heavy workboats
