TCP help

Recommended Posts

I have been having problems with a braodband connection that keeps dropping. After contacting tech supp. They suggested this.

go to run, type cmd then type in netstat. If I have more than ten tcp adresses then run av spyware etc.

I have over 30 tcp entries.

I have run avast, spybot ad aware and a couple of more..... only tracking cookies found.

However whilst watching spybot run there were several file names that caught my attention. but spybot says system is clear.

the files I noticed wwwcoolsearch, smit fraud, virtue monde for example a google search suggested they were nasties is this so and is there any way of removing them?

Hi

Download and run:

CWShredder: http://us.trendmicro.com/us/products/perso...dder/index.html

VundoFix: http://www.atribune.org/content/view/24/2/

SmitFraudFix: http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php

Follow the instructions on each site. (Preferably print them out).

As always, backing up your personal files is recommended first.

Cheers

Ian.

It's worth having a look at your system's hosts file now and again. (Just do a file search for hosts and then open it with notepad.) Sometimes the bad guys put the names of the anti-spyware or antivirus websites in there, which prevents you computer updating its adware/spyware/virus databases.

The hosts file lists names of websites you know the IP address of and it can be used to redirect to a local host, preventing access to a website. (Also useful to block ad servers!)

When your broadband link is dropped what message do you get ?

There are many reasons that the link can be dropped, but the most common are - contention (too many people sharing the same link), ISP problems - ISP servers crashing, attenuation (bad signal to noise ratios on local loop), host problems - one of the most commonest is the yahoo type toolbar add-ins which many people use in their internet browsers (Internet Explorer etc). If you have windows updates switched on (bad idea) - very often these IE add-on's can cause the browser to crash intermitently/spuriously - after IE has been updated following a windows update.

Hope this helps.

That is very much a matter of opinion and not shared by all. Many users neglect updates and since security patches are released that way, leave themselves wide open to whatever new bits of nastyness are lurking and looking for unpatched systems to infect.

Certainly updates can cause issues but they can be backed out if that happens. A critter that eats your system is harder to get rid of than a problem update.

If you are in the business and have been around any length of time, I ask you to remember the Code Red I & II worms of 2000-2001 that did an estimated $2.5 billion dollars in damage before it was finally stopped. As it passed the $2billion mark it was still causing an estimated $200 million per day worldwide and that was when the USD was worth a lot more than it is today.

A patch was available before the first attack that totally stopped the thing but the numbers above reflect unprotected/unpatched commercial systems that were hit.
