No idea about the Fox, but I've got a Drennan Super Specialist Avon/Quiver and I've used the Daiwa and John Wilson equivalents, and in my opinion the Avon rods were all too heavy for general float fishing for silver fish. Fabby for float fishing for tench or chub, mind, but they don't cast a a light float very well and they don't have the forgiving tip you need for really light hooklengths.

from memory the J.W avon was a 1.5lb t.c rod and as such would be a bit o.t.t for very light float work but the fox duo-lite is only a 0.5 lb t.c . i have the fox kevlex extreme with the 0.5lb tip and it is a beautiful rod for specimen silvers , perch etc. have also had several decent chub to 5 lb+ on it , i certainly new i had them on

After listening to loads of advice, and spending many hours annoying men in tackle shops who appear to think that women have no right to be fishing, I've recently bought the new two piece Shimano Beastmaster 12' AX Commercial Floatcast rod. It was way over my budget, (£99.99) and is probably a bit more than you are looking to spend, (although I'm sure you could get it much cheaper with a bit of research on t'Internet) but what a fabulous rod!

It ended up costing me double what I intended to pay, but on the last couple of outings I knew I'd made the right decision. I just love it!

It's a pleasure to use, and the adjustable weights in the butt section allows me use both my different sized reels, but still keep it balanced perfectly. It's 12', in two sections, and comes with its own rod bag, so I can keep it assembled and ready to go.

If there's a better and cheaper one out there, please don't tell me!!!!

After much deliberation & phoning the local tackleshops to me this morning (unfortunately no-body had anything). I have just placed an order for a pair of MAP CFS 12FT 2 PIECE MEDIUM POWER WAGGLERS. The price was reasonable enough to take the chance & hopefully should receive on Thursday.

I'm hoping to pair one up with my old but mint ABU 602m closed face reel (do people still use closed face reels these days ??) for trotting the stick float & the other with a MAP CFS 30 fixed pool jobbie on the waggler.

Now onto the next requirement (i apologise in advance as gonna need to as a lot more questions............ :headhurt:)

Thanks very much for everyones replies ... you've all been very helpful

Ah. Now if you'd mentioned that earlier, Paul, I'd have said that, although I'm a big fan of MAP CFS rods, my enthusiasm does *not* extend to their reels. I've recently scrapped a CFS 30 front drag that I bought at the same time as the rod, as the bail arm had failed. Unless you got a very good price (I paid about £30 for mine and it wasn't worth it), they're nowhere near as good value as the rods.

I had to take a CFS 40 rear drag model back to the shop soon after buying it, as the clutch was so poor. At least the front drag CFS 30 had a very smooth clutch! I found (apart from the bail arm problem) that the paint started flaking off very quickly, the metal cosmetics on the front of the spool kept catching the line, and the plastic cap securing the handle looked suspiciously like the top of a toothpaste tube painted silver (it squashes very easily if you're trying to operate it with cold, wet fingers, too).

On the plus side, you do get 3 spools with it!

don't tell us ...you want someone to come and cast it out for you paul :P

gonna have to get yourself a centerpin now :D

if they are well outside the budget but i wouldn't waste money on a cheap reel such as the map ones , used to work in tackle shop and thought they were naff same as the new mach3's look good on paper but they feel really cheap . how about a shimano exage

Yes ... i had read differering views on the MAP CFS reels. However it was one i bought a few years back as a "cheapie" but yet to really use. If i were to buy another reel i would perhaps stick to the Shimano's & Daiwas of the world but will give the MAP one benefit of doubt for time being.
