I check the Irish Independent out for the Irish News most days and found the following frightening story and implications

I'm surprised the info on here hasn't sent shudders around the millions that use life jackets, that's if they know about it?

I'm also surprised this hasn't been broadcast on the major news channels??

I've checked mine as best I can but have fired off an email to Crewsaver just in case they use Halkey Roberts firiung mechanisms.

Let me know what they say, Colin. I've got two Crewsaver lifejackets!

Do you know exactly which component is alleged to have failed? It sounds as if the gas cartridge was manually activated by the victim but the CO2 gas escaped via a relief valve or oral inflation tube valve.

Any more info?

(Both my life jackets seem to use UML activation mechanisms).

I have just checked my two for the Halkey Roberts firing mechanisms and on my snorkelling vest I have one of the valves that failed, it is not the firing mechanisms but a manual valve for topping up the life jacket or releasing the gas. I've had mine for 7 years now and it has not let me down.......as I'm still here  but now I will always have that on my mind now will it or won't it :o

I must go down to the sea again

To the lonely sea and sky

I left my shoes and socks there

I wonder if they're dry?

An absolute tragedy and my deepest sympathy goes to his widow and family.

I have to say that I've never been entirely happy with the idea of trusting my life to this type of product. I grew up using a rigid and will stick with what I have, its a personal thing. Yes it gets in the way, and its harder to get on and off than the paddle to fish, but I know that if I go over and crack my head in the process, I'll stand the best chance possible.

Perhaps now, those of use that use them and are to be honest, more vulnerable than many in that we are offshore sitting on an overgrown lunchbox, can take stock and make a much more objective decision about what safety equipment we use, and in the end, trust our lives to.
