Ebay, a warning.

The thieving gits are at it again. Just had an Email from 'suspended@ebay.com' telling me that someone had tried to access my account and would I please input my details, username, password etc, on the form provided. Have I got 'thicko' tattoed on my forehead or what?

I know it's not fishing but there are a lot of people on here who use Ebay. Just thought I'd forewarn. Nearest I've been to a catch in ages.

I get dozens of these a day, as I have dozens of different email addresses on different websites that are harvested by spammers.

In general, they just send it to any address on the assumption that quite a few will have eBay/Paypal accounts.

Any genuine email from eBay will show up in the 'Message' section of your 'My eBay'. Always log in to eBay and Paypal via the proper page. Never click on an email to log in.

They get your Email address via your Ebay ID and then send you a very plausable mail saying you've been upgraded/attacked or whatever and ask to re-enter your Ebay/PayPal details. Neither Ebay nor PayPal request these details in Emails. Same type of scam used for Bank accounts etc. Never put your details in, just forward the mail to the spoof dept of the 'true' address of whoever it was supposed to be from. Real Bank, real Ebay etc.

I've had this and the course of action is to forward the email to spoof@ebay.co.uk

Don't add any text or comments, just forward the email as it is to the above adress.

If you can include the original headers, it will help them no end.

As an ISP I warn all of my users agianst giving out their email address on web pages, newsgroups or any web forms as it is the surest way to attract SPAM.

I normally give users a couple of email addresses and point one of them to a folder that they can access via a web page and I tell them to use this address if they need to sign up for anything on the web. Just like my email address on this board It isn't my real address but I can access it easily.

As an example my wife had an email address for several years with no SPAM. She got a part time job as a local Council clerk and the council published her address on their web site. The SPAM started within days. Once they have the address the spammers will sell it on to others and the SPAM will never stop so we gave her a new address.

The silly thing is, it is very easy to encrypt email addresses for web page publishing using a small JAVA script that defeats web crawlers.

It's good practice to have 1 email address you give to friends to use as your main identity, and then a sepearte 1 to surrender to the internet for purposes such as ebay and forum registration and to give to anyone else who might want to sell or pass on your details to others. This way you dont get 10, 000 emails a day about viagra in your mailbox.

Doesnt stop the buggers from phishing though. Ive fallen foul of phishing - some are very convincing. I hope it never happens again it is very worrying. Basically never send any personnal details out of outlook or outlook express.
