Chat with Fischler postponed

Leon Roskilly

Recommended Posts

Well, they've put back the announcement of the results of the CFP review, now the online chat with with the European Fisheries Minister, Commissioner Fischler has been postponed too, to 17th June :(

See details at http://europa.eu.int/comm/chat/fischler2/index_en.htm

Still, on the bright side, this gives Sea Anglers even more time to frame questions and ask them in advance (details of where to email questions are given on the site)

Let's not waste the oportunity.

the only way to get our waters back is direct action (like what happened with iceland against us) we declair a exclusion zone ,all foreign vessels or foreigned owned vessels are sunk.we we have regained our rights THEN we make our own policy which are policed heavily ,scrap the throwing of dead fish back

when the boat has reached its quota it must stop fishing .then we have "no" fishing areas to allow the fish to recover ,if vessels in that area cannot fish then the state should recompense them (according to the fishermen they dont make much anyway so will be cheap to fund),fishing trawlers could carry on fishing foreign waters till exausted (the same as they do to us) the price of fish due to scarcity in these foreign countries would rise then we could sell them our fish at inflated prices.see how the johnie foreigner likes that :D

Some observations from Malcolm Gilbert, commenting on the New York Times Editorial

"Troubled Seas":

'Couple of points of interest.

The 200 mile EEZ did not prevent US domestic fleets from overfishing AND nor would withdrawal from the EU prevent the UK fleet from depleting stocks!

Despite much rhetoric from UK commercial fishing spokespersons, I am of the opinion that even if foreign fleets were excluded from inside the 200 mile/median line, the increased enthusiasm (and investment/effort) from the UK fleet would lead to an even worse overfishing situation.'

Our fishermen are no saints, falling for the 'Rotten Johny Foreigner' argument put about by the powerful UK fishing lobby does the fish no favours at all.

The Icelandic fisheries are geographically isolated.

The cod we find in our waters in the winter, go to other European waters in the spring. Our bass move offshore to spawn.

Unless we co-operate in the good management of our fisheries within the EU, everyone will grab what's available to be grabbed before it moves on and to the next nation's waters.

The proper reform of the Common Fisheries Policy is our best hope for the future, and believe me, like it or not, it's the only deck on the table.

you wont get a reform ,johnie foreigner would prevent it. if our fishermen get too greedy then they wont have the excuse of foreign "visitors" depleting stocks only themselves :)

Reform? We`ll get bucket loads of them !! But I bet in the end, they`ll virtually cancell each other out? The only reform that will work is to stop all the european countries subsidising their fishing fleets. Fish prices will rocket and at least half of the european fleet will be forced out of business !! Fish stocks will then be safer by default, not by any wishy-washy politicians shenanigins ??

Eliott Morley is well known for his `stocks must be protected, but not at the cost of British jobs` stance. Everytime fishing quotas are raised, it appears that governments are being responsible. The reality is, governments just swap quota cuts under the table. Then anounce what look like swingeing reductions!! Whils`t very few boats ever reach their quotas, because the fish just aren`t there.

Boats that appear to catch their tonnage are usualy found with illegal fish on board. Like the scandinavian boats supposedly full of white-fish. But half the catch being sand eels!!

We sea anglers will never get what we deserve. Why, you may ask? Because we love fishing. Most of us spend more time putting fish back than filling our freezers? We always `know` that the next trip will be better. We can always find an excuse for a bad day. That`s why we pay through the nose for overpriced `New` tackle that will give us that little edge over the fish?

The only trouble is? Our kids are not so ready to accept bad catches and get turned off sea angling. Thinking it boring. When they become the majority and a huge downturn in revenue from pleasure angling results. THEN the governments of Europe will be falling over themselves to do something. Sadly it will be too late.

In many places, around the world (some quite surprising places in fact) the value of recreational angling has been recognised, fish given sports status, marine reserves created, angling promoted.

But nowhere has this happened because the authorities took the initiative.

It's always come about through anglers, fed up with years of moaning and nothing changing (except for the worse), actually getting organised and working to bring about change.
