Stingrays

Has anyone caught a Stingray off the north Kent or Essex coast in the last couple of years? I caught one in 1980 near Brightlingsea, but haven't heard of one since.

yes m8 i have, and others have been caught including the new british record from kent

We had one on my boat, fisging on the Maplin sands which was approx 70lbs about five years ago and i ahve heard of others caught in that area since then.

I am going to have a good try for one next year. Mine came on hermit crab, it was a fluke, I was after smoothounds. I would be very interested to hear if any of the others came on anything other than crab.

It's a long time ago now, but the pier at Walton on the Naze used to be a good place for them during the summer months. IIRC king rag was a favourite bait for them. I am sure that Vagabond fished there for them on at least a couple of occasions, he might remember a bit more.

Hooked into one this summer on Walton Pier, only a small one, but without a drop net it caused me all sorts of problems, it was like a scene from Its a Knockout, ducking under this and passing my rod round lamposts etc before I could get it to a set of ladders so I could climb down and pull it up.

There's always a few caught around the 50-60lb mark from the river Crouch upto Harwich with the favourite spots being the sandy beaches off St Osyths and Walton/Frinton beaches
