I use poppers in Malta and also with a result.

I managed some 30 barracudas last year using spinning cranckbaits (mainly Rapalas, Yo-Zuri and Halco)

I find the Rapalas work brilliantly in calm waters.

 

Be sure you use the florocarbon lines if you're fishing from shores.

 

Local dealers tend to stock quite a great variety of poppers around here.
