My understanding is that portions of copyrighted material can be used for others for 'fair comment'

It is when an article or other copyrighted material is published giving the impression that it is the work of the publisher that a serious breach of copyright occurs.

So, it is probably within the scope of the above fair dealing exception to make single photocopies of short extracts of a copyright work for certain purposes, that is, non-commercial research or private study, criticism or review, reporting current events, and so on.

Thanks Leon,

Just as they said then they can use whatever they want as its in the public domain. Glad I never said anything bad now.

some people have got everything on record :D youve never said anything that FN could use glen.

:D:D still we have not always seen eye to eye on a lot of things, but i would never stoop so low as to informe FN if you had and i thought it could in some way benefit my argument.

regards.

Leon's comment seems about right - I really don't mind what they print, personally.

Anglers' Net Ltd. merely provides a facility for you to post your own comments, in the same way that BT provide phone lines for you to talk to people - they're not responsible for what you say. If you check the terms and conditions, and also look at the main precedent in internet forum law (Godfrey vs Demon Internet Ltd), you'll see that you are wholly responsible for your own comments.

Advice is, if it isn't fact and you're not prepared to bank your house on it in court, don't say it. Similarly, if you think it will damage angling, don't say it.

That would be my advice - whay you do, yourselves, is up to you.

I'm at ease with that Elton. I have taken legal advice quite a bit in the past especially relating to what you say in forums, what you can publish on your own website and what you can and can't do for seo purposes etc.

But I think what has happened has come as a bit of a shock and we should all be aware that the press do look in here and read what is said. Only yesterday morning I had a reporter ring me asking for a comment on licences and bag limits. I refused to comment only to be told there was enough info on the net to make a story anyway - makes you wonder why they bothered ringing.

I got a link from someone on the net of an excellent company down south who are good with internet law. Obviously they would charge you if you need representing but they are quite good on the advice front, they will even ring you back if you email them your number. If anyone ever wants the url just pm me and I'll pass it on.
