Summer Pit - CEMEX Yateley   1800 - 2330   Warm and overcast. Temp 'down' to 18ºC when I left.   4 Tench: 6lb 1oz, 4lb 10oz, 3lb 6oz, 3lb 3oz. 1 Crucian 2lb 11oz. 1 rudd   Can't have too much of a good thing when it comes to catching big crucians! (or tench for that matter!). 3 Tench on 6mm s-pellet in the margins, 1 tench and the crucian on meat about 1½ rod lengths out. Both caught in consecutive casts just as it got properly dark.

Wellow Brook - 14/06/2010

Slow evening on the Wellow Brook again with James. The drop in temperature and slightly changeable seems to have put the fish down and we only managed one small trout apiece despite fishing some of our previously productive pools. We were however treated to the special sight of the Barn Owl hunting again which was probably the best moment in the evening.

Little River Avon - 13/06/2010

A great day out spent on the Little River Avon in Gloustershire with friend and guest Vince. This was the first time either of us had fished the river and I had been looking forward to this day all week after hearing and reading plenty of good reports on the quality of game and coarse fishing on the river. We arrived at the upstream end of the syndicate’s stretch of river, supposedly the most productive but also the most popular. The river here flows through beautiful mature deciduous woodland

Wellow Brook - 12/06/2010

Decided to try out a new stretch of the Wellow Brook a few miles upstream of where I normally fish. The river here is delightful, smaller and more intimate than further downstream with large beds of Ranunculus and crystal clear. Stealth is the name of the game and I took great care when working my way upstream to keep a low profile, tread carefully and stay close to the high banks. I ended up with three Trout all on Mayfly nymph which I was pleased with seeing as I was fishing on a hot afternoon

River Chew - 09/06/2010

I returned to the Chew a few days later, slightly further upstream this time hoping that the water here would be faster and more suitable for fly fishing. The river looked more promising with more pace and shallow sections that looked promising. However, there didn’t seem to be so many fish rising here and I struggled a little only managing a few missed takes. The river apparently is very good for Coarse fishing too so I think I may return here with the pin when the season starts!   Attached

River Chew - 06/06/2010

Had a few hours spare on this Sunday and decided to try out the river Chew again but this time the middle reaches below Chew Valley Reservoir. The river here certainly looks healthier and more inviting than the upper reaches although I was surprised by the lack of clarity and the silty bottom. However, there were fish rising to the Mayfly and some of the rises looked like they came from quite decent fish. Part of the reason for fishing the Middle Chew is that it has the potential to produce spec

Lots to look at!

Well that's the positive spin on 3 blanks! I think the real problem is that I'm a pleasure angler who aims a bit high for the hours that I'm able to dedicate. But they were still 3 enjoyable sessions.   21 June. Went down to the syndicate lake at lunchtime, and there were loads of carp in the shallow end in the hot sun. I threw in a few dog biscuits, and one or two were taken, and I gambled on them growing keener in the evening. But they weren't!   28 June. Had a crack at the crucians on a

Summer Pit - CEMEX Yateley   1800 - 2330   Clearing skies - cooler than of late - down to 14ºC.   2 Tench; 7lb 0oz, 3lb 2oz. 1 Crucian 2lb 13oz. 1 Bream 2½lb.   Well, I'm certainly on a roll at the moment! My biggest ever Tinca from this venue and my 2nd best ever Crucian from here. After a really barren few seasons on the Crucian front this is now my 3rd, 2½lb+ fish from 3rd different venue! Lots of bubbling and activity - but nothing but line bites until

NAA Stillwater - Widmead   0415 - 1015   High cloud - warm. 15º -> 20ºC   4 Carp; 10lb 1oz, 9lb 6oz, 9lb 0oz, 7lb 11oz. 1 Crucian; 3lb 2oz. 2 roach, 1 rudd (all 3 of which needed the net to land.)   Despite the splendid crucian and the hard fighting commons - a quiet morning bite-wise. Crucian on float fished meat - in the margins - pretty much only bite of the morning - apart from the roach and rudd - wasn't even 'carped' as is the norm. Biggest common

Summer Pit - CEMEX Yateley   1800 - 2330   Warm and overcast evening - still 18ºC when I packed up. Lovely shirtsleeves evening - though the mossies were a pain!   5 Tench; 4lb 11oz, 4lb 6oz, 3lb 13oz, 3lb 12oz, 3lb 3oz. 1 Crucian 1lb 15oz (and a bit!)   Very pleasant evening's float fishing. Quite a bit of activity and loads of bubbling. 3 Tench and the Crucian caught tight (ie less than 1 metre) to the margins. All fish on meat over pellet. 1st Crucian from here for a couple of years!

It's been a while but re-aquainted at last

River Kennet, Thatcham, Sunday 27th June 2010   Well this was an unexpected bonus, I didn’t think I’d be able to fish for at least a month but circumstances conspired to make this short session available to me.   The problem was of course deciding on whether to watch the footie or go fishing, I’m not really a footie fan but I do tend to watch significant England games. On this occasion, however, they were going to have to do without my support, I’d bought maggots yesterday just in case and

NAA Stillwater - Thatcham   1300 - 0930   Hot and sultry (again!). Max 25ºC, Min 12ºC.   4 Carp (but see below!) ; 14lb2oz, 9lb 7oz, 5¾ & 4¾lbs. 3 Crucians; 2lb 14oz, 2lb 2oz, 1lb 9oz. 4 roach & 2 rudd.   A very quiet night - saved, for me at least - by a very productive last 2½hrs when I had the 14 (on floating crust from right under my feet) and all 3 crucians on float fished meat - hooray! Paul and I had set ourselves a target for the session of

River Kennet - Padworth   1815 - 2330   Warm and clear, lovely evening to be by the river!   1 Chub 6lb 5oz (!!) (1oz short of my PB!)   First trip to this new stretch of Kennet back-water - which is mainly quite shallow and with low flow - due to the sluices being up - suspect it will be a great flood venue. Was here ostensibly for a barbel or two but if the chub are that calibre I'm not complaining! Would love to meet him again in the winter - should thi

Wellow Brook - 03-05/06/2010

Unsurprisingly it wasn’t long before James and I returned to the Wellow Brook. The glorious weather and hatching Mayflies meant that we spent three wonderful evenings on the river in a row! On the first evening we decided to try slightly further downstream than we had on the first visit. The fishing started well with James missing a good rise to his dry fly straight away! Despite the fact that there were fish rising along the whole stretch catching them proved to be tricky due to the low clear w

Wellow Brook - 28/05/2010

I decided to check out a new river (the Wellow Brook) with James after work. It would be our first time fishing the Wellow although I was reasonably familiar with the river as I had walked along it in the Winter. On arriving we found the river running crystal clear and looking very healthy with luxuriant growth of streamer weed and what I think is Ranunculus. It looked far more appealing than what I remembered from the Winter.   We spent a while fish spotting and with Mayflies beginning to ha

River Kennet - Newbury   0415 - 0800   Clear and cool - only 7ºC when I arrived.   3 Chub - 2lb9oz, 2lb3oz ,1½lb. 1 Barbel, 3lb 2oz. 4 Perch (1 'pounder' of 1lb 6oz), 16 Dace, 14 Roach, 4 Gudgeon, 2 Brownies & 1 Grayling.   After the frustrations of the opening day, a pre-breakfast visit to an old friend. A nice mixed bag all on trotted maggot - was hoping for some bigger chub but nice to see some 'silvers' showing. Barbel caught on the very last cast of the morning!

Variety is the Spice of Life

River Kennet, below Thatcham, Friday 18th June 2010   Another day and another venue, this time probably the most easterly stretch of the Kennet that TAA & NAA books allow me to fish.   A lot of work has gone into this venue during the close season, death trap styles have been replaced with something more capable of supporting a gear laden angler and the stretch has been extended by about a hundred and fifty yards, the extension provides another ten swims and some great wading opportuni

Marsh Farm   0730 - 1800   Bright and sunny with a stiff NE breeze - one day I'll get to fish this place when it isn't blowing a hooley!!! Was nice sat out in the sun - though really quite chilly when I moved to a swim in the shade!   2 Crucians - both circa 1lb, 8 rudd, 1 roach, perch & gudgeon.   A nice social start to the season in the company of Paul & Alan. I would like to blame my lack of fish on the conditions - though that doesn't cut any i

Haven't Blanked this Season

River Kennet, Thatcham, Thursday 17th June 2010   Second day out today but with a later start. I don’t think I can cope with two consecutive dawn raids, particularly when dawn occurs so early at this time of year. So today it was brownie point earning first thing and off to the river mid morning, the venue being one of my favourite trotting swims and the only place where I’ve caught Barbel (only three and tiddlers at that).     Armed with plenty of bait this time the plan was to sit it

Chocks Away!

River Kennet, Thatcham, Wednesday 16th June 2010   Well here we are, first day of the 2010/11 season and I have to start with an admission. I did fish a stillwater a couple of weeks ago to test the rod that I refurbished during the close season so strictly speaking I didn’t quite make it. I can, however, categorically state that I haven’t used a centrepin for 3 months and so it was with some anticipation that I left home at 3:30 this morning and headed for the Kennet. This was a stretch I had

Mon 14th June Carped out

Last week another crack at the big rudd on the syndicate lake. Put half a bag of groundbait in at lunchtime, but when I returned in the evening I could still see it untouched in the shallow, clear water - no rudd, no carp, not even small roach. Blanked.   Today 7-10pm. Went to a club lake in search of crucians in a swim next to some lilies. Started on maggot, and it was small roach a chuck - and one rudd. Switched to a very small meat bait on 16 hook, but little interest, even when I switched
