  1. I've often wondered this when thinking where i'd like to live when im 'older'! Wrexham is certainly not in the running, at least for me. There are a few trout streams and the river Dee in the local area, otherwise though its into cheshire to find small rivers where you can stalk chub, target big perch etc. That said, if you like Grayling you're in with a shout of breaking some records here (just dont tell anyone!) After visiting Oxford for the first time last year i decided it would have to be one of the best places to live (you're very lucky anderoo!). Lots of small clear streams, the mighty thames, canals, gravel pits, it has it all! Salisbury also impressed me. I remember visiting a friend who was in university near there, walking 5 mins from the train station to where a small river (cant remember the name... nadder i think) Joined with the Avon, first peer into a side stream and what did i see... 2 perch approaching 3lb each sitting in a slack with 2 chub of around the same size floating in the current 10 feet behind them. You just don't see things like that around here! Fishing the Avon at Britford was also a fantastic experience. Christchurch - had a holiday there last year. Again, a good variety. Saw some monster mullet in the harbour there, and some big ones way upstream in the stour. Didnt catch much but the area looks a big challenge! Norfolk Broads/Norwich - Another nice area. Easy fishing for roach/skimmers, the sort of place you'd love to go to teach your kids the basics! that said some huge perch (had one 3lb 8oz) and pike in those rivers, with the added bonus of the Wensum for Barbel/Chub. The area which i think of as the 'holy grail' of coarse fishing for me is the Newbury area. Alot of you guys are lucky enough to live near. Id one day just like the privilege to fish a nice stretch of the Kennet or another river in that area. I know alot of people are in love with the game fishing here in North Wales though. The Valleys around Llangollen are breathtaking even for locals like me. A handful of Grayling caught most years over 4lb surely presents me with a fantastic challenge right on my own doorstep. I really shouldnt be so greedy should I?!!
  2. please do! I've been meaning to fish that stretch for ages and it would be great to see some pictures!
  3. hi. some big fish have come out of the basin at telfords warehouse in Chester. you could also try near the shady oak pub by beeston castle. I have heard that backford is one of the better stretches though.
  4. haha I wasn't critising it just stating what I have observed! yes it is often pretty awkward, luckily the summer months mean I can fish after work too.
  5. i am 23 and the majority of my friends have never shown an interest in fishing. from my experience most fishermen in their early twenties are session carp fishermen and shift workers. I don't want to be stereotyping but this is what I have found in the last 4 years. at the risk of sounding snobby, I am the only accountant I know of who fishes, and so people in work often find my hobby a strange one. the vegan fishing haters really do annoy me but like anderoo says, it's usually too much hastle to bother airing your views and educating them. many of them arent the type to listen to another person's opinion anyway.
  6. hi mate. there are a few cheap clubs you can join, moss valley is £20 a year and has a good amount of carp/bream/roach/perch llay anglers have the llay reservoir as well as a few stretches of the dee for after June 16th. I am a member of Warrington anglers which has more stretches on the dee, good ones. there is a club which offers trout fishing on the river alyn, i think it's Bradley angling association. if you go into deggies tackle shop on ruabon road they have most memberships available there and will give you good advice. ask me any other questions you have, I'm a relative novice but I have got a good knowledge of most local venues
  7. hi rodey, I know the dee well. where by are you planning on fishing ? and what for? Chester city centre is not the best this time of year unless you're after pike, but I'm sure prince albert anglers own the city stretch now. if you are happy to catch anything then head for farndon, free fishing next to the old bridge but you'll have to get there early this time of year, eg before 7am! plenty of dace and chub to catch either trotting or maggot feeder halfway across the river. the pegs nearer the bridge are generally better. if you can't get a peg there, head for eclleston, a bit nearer to Chester. it's deeper here though so feeder would be best I suppose. best of luck!
  8. Davy, im thinking of joining this club, but before I do I was just wondering one thing.. is the Nantwich club affiliated with Dee anglers, enabling members to fish all Dee anglers beats, or do they only have the 1 Holt stretch? Thanks
  9. I would have to say my local river Dee (the welsh one). The river holds so much mystery for me, most catches are kept secret and although rumours circulate, there is a lack of solid evidence. The maximum sizes for each species are very rough, for example, barbel were thought to go to 5-6lbs in the river, yet i know from experience that this is far from the truth! Nobody wold assume that there are genuine 3lb roach in the river either I dont think that i could fully learn how to fish this river given 10 lifetimes to do so. Just when i think i know where the chub lie in a particular swim i blank fishing there 3 times in a row. I suppose that as it is a spate river the swims are constantly changing (i arrived at a favourite swim today to find a 40 foot tree across the river) I also enjoy this river as it is largely underfished and there really could be fish of any size in it! Some huge bass come from the estuary too!
  10. Hi mate, nice name. Firstly, dont assume that youre being ignored if youre not getting any replies, the members on here are from all over the world so may not know the area. Ok, so the river severn around bridgenorth is rumoured to have some of the best barbel fishing in the country so have a look into that, i know there is a free stretch at ironbridge. Otherwise i have seen a few small lakes when driving along the shrewsbury to bridgenorth road in the past. Dont know the names of these but try a google search of "coarse fishing shropshire" or similar and im sure youll get some decent results
  11. Hi I've never been to Hurghada but I imagine the fish species will be similar to sharm ie LOADS of the tropical variety, eels, rays etc with Barracuda etc further out. Would be a good idea to spend a few hours snorkelling around the area your going to fish (away from the busy tourist areas!) to find out the depths/ any features where fish congregate. For bait, you will probably struggle to find any worm type baits unless you can collect them yourself so i would try bread (should be loads on the hotel breakfast buffet!) and things like sweetcorn if possible. There are plenty of mullet in the red sea that will take these baits. If you catch any small fish it may be worth live/deadbaiting for something bigger, I suspect you might catch a horrible looking conger eel or something judging by the ones I saw in sharm. Also, take some plugs and spinners, a few floats and leads and alternate methods until you have some luck. Some parts of the red sea are deep close in, good for float fishing, and others are still only 6foot deep a mile out and a decent cast my be required. If you can, try and get some local knowledge. Ask them loads of questions without annoying them too much and fish accordingly. Have a nice time and good luck!
  12. Hi guys I must confess to being a bit of a 'lurker' when it comes to anglers net. I follow some of the threads religiously and have checked the site nearly every day since joining. Being only 22 and an accountant by trade, i'm not the best debater and so I like to follow threads like this one in order to build an opinion of these more serious and political situations. I wonder if there are alot of similar members like me who are happy to cast a 'yes' or 'no' vote, but feel that they can't really add much in the way of a detailed view, and so take the views of the dozen or so "elders" from which to make their decision. Unfortunately this could be the case with the AT vote. Im sure they have had issues covering the threat of eastern european poachers, possibly exaggerating the individual situations like a tabloid newspaper would, and in effect winding up the general AT reader to the point where a biased vote is inevitable.
  13. thanks for adding the info carpfisherman. I just need to add that the lake is now members only, i think its £20. This ensures the quality of the fishing stays at a good level. Plenty of small pike in there also for anyone who likes good sport and isnt too fussed on size
  14. this will help in the short term bob.. http://www.shropshire.gov.uk/webcams.nsf/o...025759800488158 basically, watch the shingle bank infront of the trees. If it starts dissapearing then get out fishing! also a guy on the severn thread on here regularly updates river levels http://barbelfishingworld.yuku.com/forums/...09-to-2010.html
  15. I have the same problem on a local lake close to a housing estate. Think of the summer holidays as a closed season for the lake, and fish it september until june instead. Thats what I do and it makes fishing there much more enjoyable and peaceful! ( im such an old man of a 22 year old!)
  16. Rusty When in September are you going? Bear in mind that from 11th - 13th there is a big music festival on, and the island will be all but taken over by drunken student types (like me! )
  17. Hi guys This Saturday I am off on my annual fishing holiday for a week, and this year its to Christchurch. I will be staying at a campsite called Meadowbank which has the Stour running through it. Just after some advice on what would be best to target this far down the river really. From what I have gathered the river here is a bit deeper and slower than the Throop fishery. Its the stretch downstream of Throop beat 3 and upstream of Iford bridge. The website for the camp shows a guy holding a large Barbel, but I wonder whether this is a rare catch, and maybe I would be better targetting chub with bread for instance. Any knowledge of the area would help me greatly. Thanks!
  18. Hi Mark. I have stayed in the chalets you mention twice, and thanks to some good advice from John I have caught well. You may find that its easier to fish in the boatyards where you can watch a static float and steadily catch roach and perch, as the main river is often a bit choppier because of boats, and a slight flow. However if you do try fishing into darkness for the bream then the main river is the place to be. (fish off the wooden decking opposite the restaurant on the opposite bank). If you fancy a big perch, have a go upstream of the railway bridge, trust me, there are some monsters there but be aware of the many jack pike if you are lure fishing. I found that it was possible to catch fish anywhere on the river regardless of depth of water or if fishing to features. Have a good trip mate, im so jealous!
  19. Cracking read. Highlights the importance of polaroids. Without them you may never have even noticed the bream were there. Keep up the reports
  20. Welcome to the website goose. You will find plenty of good fishing information on here should you need it, though it sounds like your doing ok! ( 143 fish in 8 hours!!!)
  21. Yo Dean. check out this for your levels. http://www.fishing-visitwales.co.uk/fisher...ls/Default.aspx you'll have to register, but then you can check the river levels in 5 different spots on the severn as well as on on other rivers good luck with the fishing mate
  22. haha nah i didnt see any turtles or hear any dr who theme tunes on this occasion...! Yes steve it looked a little like that. like green clouds within the water Il assume that it was harmless then. Didnt have any real feedback off the EA apart from the usual quick call from a local warden saying 'il go and check it out'. I was worried about the few hundred pure bred crucians and er.... *cough 3lb roach cough* ahem. Thanks for all the replies anyway guys!
  23. Just got back from my club lake and before I left i noticed a bright green odourless liquid coming from a pipe and into the lake. I saw no distressed fish. I have phoned the EA to report it, and they said its possible that it is a harmless drain cleaner than councils use. Anyone have any more info on what it could be, or witnessed this before?
  24. Im SO excited!! its only my 3rd 'June 16th' so i really haven't had chance for the novelty to wear off yet! I wont be trying the usual 4am arrival at favourite barbel swim only to find that im 5th angler on the bank. Instead il be starting at a more sensible hour and spending the day trotting for grayling/chub/dace/trout with my 'pin. Only thing thats going to slightly spoil the party is that due to having my foot strapped up through injury, i wont be able to pull on the waders, so itl be a bankside approach. Still excited though
