  1. It all makes sense now. I thought it might have been just coincidence that my bra size has gone up since I started fishing The Trent. The old ones make good groundbait catapults though; you can fire two balls at once.
  2. They seem to be common along the North Bank of the Nene, where I can nearly always hear them munching the reeds close by, but very rarely catch site of one. There are also a few right in the centre of Bourne where I live. They seem to outnumber the rats, and it's a bit worrying when people claim they have seen these rats, and demand poison to be put down. I suppose any poison is just as likely to be eaten by voles.

  4. I would probably go more often, as there would be a better choice of swims, and less fish with stupid names. It would be a bit difficult only to use leads of under an ounce though, especially on some of the rivers. I hope I would still be allowed to use my Woolworths sun lounger with the bottom, folding section sawn off. I used one of those for years, and Kevin Nash even used to make a dark green, waterproof cover to fit them.
  5. Do you mean to say you didn't make a flying leap to slide an unhooking mat under it before it landed? You'll have your PAC badge ripped off your jacket and your forceps snapped in half for an offence like that. It's a novel way of avoiding a slimed up landing net though.

  7. I agree with most of the sentiments supporting tolerance of all types of angler, although surely this doesn't extend to pole anglers? [ 15 April 2002, 07:22 AM: Message edited by: Peter Sharpe ]

  10. I think it's a passing fad. People are just dying baits in fluorescent colours just because dyes are now avilable to make it possible. Someone will probably catch fish on glitter covered boilies next year, and deduce that their success was entirley due to that. Black baits were very much in vogue a few years ago, and they were considered to give you a bit of an edge at the time. If nice, pretty day-glo baits brighten up your life and make the world seem a happier place, then by all means use them.
  11. Direct Action! Get up to date Phil, that became passe yonks ago. It's Reclaim The Streets now, which is why I have formed a group entitled Reclaim The Rivers. The East Midlands branch is holding a sit-in in the Lower Welland on May 1st. Be there or be square. Snorkels optional.

  13. By putting a piece of cocktail stick through them when you boiled them?
  14. You will certainly get people offering contradictory points of view on this one, but my recommendation is to keep well within the suggested levels. Many neat flavours are intensely bitter even to our own comparitively undiscerning taste buds, and if you add too much there has to be a very real risk of actually creating a repellent. You could try to compensate by adding sweeteners, but you could soon end up with something quite toxic. Some people have had success on over flavoured hook baits, but if you were to use the same levels on your freebies, the carp might begin to regard all boilie shaped objects as unpalatable. I have stopped using liquid flavours altogether, and don't feel that my results have suffered as a consequence. Others are bound to disagree, but I feel much happier keeping to the natural flavourings of the component parts as much as possible. [ 14 April 2002, 06:35 PM: Message edited by: Peter Sharpe ]
  15. Well if it's any help, Vanish shows signs of abrasion if you even look at it.
  16. I'm surprised at Dave's reply, because I have found that they can drown in a fairly short time, certainly in a couple of hours. I had to stop putting worms into my fish tank, as any uneaten ones would crawl under the gravel, then drown and rot.

  18. Anyway, going back to the original question: tickle it between the pectorals; if he laughs it's a male, and if she laughs it's a female. Simple.

  20. I fully support the retention of the closed season on rivers, and I too would like to know exactly who is lobbying for it to be scrapped, and what are their motives. I suspect the tackle trade and other commercial interests to be behind it, rather than any particular group of anglers. The angling press of course, will use any excuse to whip up a bit of fervour in an attempt to sell more papers. Just one plea though, can everybody contribute to this thread in a way that those outside the various political groups and societies can understand? Sometimes I feel as if it's a private competition to see who can be the first person to create a post composed entirely of acronyms.

  22. Pop-ups made with the Nash Airball mix are so buouyant that they'll come crashing through the surface film and hover two feet over the water..well almost. You can make a paste with the mix that will be equally as buouyant.
