  1. Hi Newt, just telling it straight, and there's no point in glossing things over.Speaking my mind as usual. There aren't too many commercial type venues in Ireland, and if this one is anything to go by,then God help us if any new ones sprout up and go the same way. Signrd...Sugar coated Piker....
  2. Fishery????, more like bloody Colditz. It has a rule list as long as your arm, don't do this, don't do that..I'll throw you off if u do that.Hook size limit is a 16 and it has to be barbless.I had a 12lb carp on a size 12 barbed super specialist hook, and the owner actually blamed me for the way fishing has gone downhill in Ireland..ROFL...I fished it once when the Tench fishing in the area was bad.Never again.A lot of bait bans are in place, and you can only use pellets if you buy them off the bloke who runs the place.Rip off or what.... That has been the first commercial fishery I've ever fished, and will never go back if it was the last place on earth...
  3. Looks like Fishrite have sold some more gear. Sleeping bags x 2 ,jacket and bib'n'brace...many thanks. for the reply's..
  4. O.K I'll rise to the bait.... Why in God's name would any-one want to use a jack as a bait.I know,I know, Pike eat pike, and Big Hen fish are quite partial to their smaller counterparts. But,and this is a big BUT, there is a bountifull and wonderfull selection of other baits that can be got a lot easier, and probably a lot more effective.Just look at the humble Mackrell or Herring. They have been catching Pike( and some superb specimen fish) since the wheel was invented. They will continue to do so!!! Then there's the naturals, roach, perch, rudd, eels, etc etc. Sea baits, smelt, garfish, sandeels, red gurnard, codling, whiting, not to mention some of the more exotic baits like flying fish, snapper. My advice, and this is in the best possible taste, go open your mind and eyes, and discover that you DON'T need to use Pike to catch Pike..
  5. I've seen a few requests for an Anglers Net chatroom,is anyone still in favour of it?The last anglers one I used to visit, was on the Angling in Ireland Site( now a shadow of its former self).Through it I met Bobbyf from Scotland, who is now a firm friend and comes over to stay with me and fish here in Ireland    .Also some other anglers who have now joined the Irish region of the Tenchfishers which I started. So,what I'm trying to say is that Chatrooms for anglers have a lot going for them and can only enhance the best fishing web site there is. B**l licking over, how's about it Elton?...
  6. I have seen a lot about FishRite tackle both on the web,and have their brochure(courtesy of this site). As I'm in the market for a new jacket, bib and brace, and a sleeping bag I have been considering Fishrite. My original gear has been Whychwood, and to be honest they are a hard act to follow with quality and features, that is untill Leeda took over the company and their gear now is not up to scratch  . Before I part with my drinking vouchers, has any-one got any of their gear and can vouch for it?.Any views will be gratefully accepted.
  7. Free Spirit?.... Nice rods, have 2 for pike fishing from the boat.So slim they're like pencils.Do have a bit of backbone, even though they are only 10ft and 2.5lb t.c.
  8. Steve, many thanks for the suggestions for treble hooks.Got my hands on some VMC's and they do look good. Many thanks...Des
  9. Firstly, Pike floats that explode into pieces after a few uses, also paint coming off so it makes 'em hard to see.Treble hooks that straighten very easily(Fox).Boilies that don't catch fish, even after you've spent your hard earned dosh on 2KG's of 10mm.Pike Gags that are named HUMANE....That really gets on my nerves....
  10. Can any-one give me an on-line shop who do VMC's. Caliber only seem to do them in 10's.I would prefer 6's and if not too big 4's... Cheers,all....Des
  11. I would tend to agree with Steve's sentiments,I tell a few close friends what I'm catching and where.I do this because they tell me what's happening day in day out.As for strangers, tactics and bait hints are free, but ask for locations and it's shut up shop time.In september I had a new P.B pike of 31.10 and when the fish was in the boat, looked around to see who was about(paranoid or what)!.No-one about I thought my secret was safe, but 2 days later there were a few who asked me about the 30 I'd caught!!!!Obviously all was denied, but it just goes to show you never know who's watching.... In Ireland,we have another serious problem, namely poaching. There are those who pose as anglers, and as soon as they get good info on Pike, the nets go down, and in a short matter of time the fishing is ruined. It has happened before, where they have turned up at club meetings posing as anglers wanting to join the club.Makes me mad it does!!!!!   Yours, Secret Squirell Piker
  12. Hi all, having been there, done it,and bought the t-shirt with treble hooks,i have come to the conclusion that here is not one hook that is good in all departments. The closest to perfection i've come across is Drennan's flank trebles, strong, fine wired, and very sharp. What let's it down in my opinion is that small diddy hook for holding the bait on.Partrigde hooks, can be brittle and expensive.Fox trebles are too easy to bend and again expensive. Some of the cheeper hooks that are sold loose in tackle shops, aren't just up to the job.Eagle claw trebles are good, but a wider gape would be nice(they are made, but I can't find them in the U.K.).. I'm in the market to try a new treble at the moment,so what do you reccomend, and why?....
  13. Newt, your a Beaut. Your info was spot on and i have had no prob's so far..Cheers for the help, really appreciated...The Piker.
  14. Hi guys, hope you can help with this one.I am constantly getting this message on my P.C. when I click on to some links.A Run Time Error Has Occured, Do You Wish To DeBug?...Now I do not know what is going on here ,but I just click on the No option. When I did click on the Yes option I got some Microsoft pages up on screen which left me even more baffled. If anyone can help me rid my p.c. of this I would be gratefull. Cheers, Guy's (and Gal's of course)...The Piker!
  15. Gaffer, two which spring to mind are the JRC one, which i have myself and for the money is superb, lined, buckles to the bedchair, improves insulation no end, and is waterproof, and one from Gold Label Tackle which also has these features .It also is an excellent cover( but far more expensive).I'd go for the JRC cover( as I already have!!!!).
  16. Would love to post a pic, but having no scanner is a bit of a bummer and i use a normal camera. will see if i can get something sorted later..Cheers guys!
  17. Hi all, just back on-line after 3.5 months off, due to major building work being done on the house.See all the regulars are still here(GOOD). God! it's nice to be back! Anyway, just to let u all know ,while off-line I did a bit of fishing and beat my P.B. Pike by 1lb 8oz..New P.B. is now 31lb 10oz Hi Bobby, get saving your pennies and I'll take you to the Lough when you are next over....The Piker.
  18. Tench and Chub in The Lagan?...I don't think so some how, although it would be nice!!!!!
  19. Oooops, I posted this under Electro Sampsons by mistake....anyway, I have a copy of Fred Bullers book,"Angling,A Solitary Vice".This is one of the leather bound editions of which only 50 were made.It is numbered, and signed by the great man himself. A modern classic to say the least, and a rare one at that. The book is in perfect condition and comes in it's own leather bound cover box. I have a price in mind,if you are interested e-mail me,or phone..078 01 546668......Des. [ 24. August 2002, 11:19 AM: Message edited by: ThePiker ]

  21. Hi Peter, how about the slogan "Coarse angling AGAINST The Countryside Alliance" "Keep your Bloody hands of our sport"!!... Your views are the same as mine on this subject ,so I wont repeat all you have said, but there is eneough wrongs in fishing(especially Pike Angling) without these cretins coming on board.Lets hope common sense prevails and anglers disassociate themselves with these slaughterers of our wildlife...Des
  22. The Piker, real name Des Tobin, live in Belfast(Yeuk), 38, two kids(boys 2 and 9.)Work for a large High St retail company where u probably buy your boxer shorts and the wife her smalls.Started fishing when i was about 6.Catching 100+ perch in a day was easy back then.Gave it up when i was 15 and got back into it about 12 years ago.Love pike fishing(hence the handle) and have an obsession with Tench.Am Chairman for The Northern Ireland Pike Society and R/O for The Tenchfishers(Ireland).Biggest Pike is 30lb 12oz and 7lb 12oz for Tench.Would love to catch a bigger pike but will settle for the next 20lber.As for Tench, will die happy if I catch an Irish 8lber or bigger. There is a lot wrong in Irish fishing that p*ss me off big time, but some really good things in it that keep me going(Pike Society and Tenchfishers). Another ambition of mine is to get myself another Vespa.Had 2 back in the 80's when i was a Mod,but i spend all my spare dosh on tackle now... Well that's me in a few lines........Tight ones..Des [ 11. August 2002, 11:45 PM: Message edited by: ThePiker ]
