  1. Hiya every-one, as I said I would keep you posted on the development or not as the case may be. I ordered a new 3 port valve which arrived today. I took the notor from the valve fitted in the heating system and changed it , still no good. So son in Law came up and we had another look at the system, and he tested all the electrics, both tank and room stats etc, all was ok. So went a little further and he found that the P.C.B. on the valve was at fault. We took the P.C.B. from the the new valve and fitted it to the system and away it went, all working fine now. But he did notice and put right a few conections that were loose in the main wiring center for the Ch/Hw system. But all working A1 now. Thanks for the help that was given by all concerned.
  2. Thanks again every-one, it's quite a relief to know that there's some-one out there that will give you as help and advice that they can, even down to spending time looking for a part that some-one needs to get them going again. Either I or my wife will be ordering the valve that Ayjay, was has so kindly sent the link too. We are so gratefull to you all for taking the time and trouble to.........well I've said it all above. Once again thanks so much. Phill.
  3. Well it worked last night and again this morning, but tonoght when I got home from work in's not working again. I took off the cover and moved the arm again and away it went. If I turn the tank stat up it starts to move the arm, and if i turn it down again almost immediatly it returns to the CH possition. Got me baffled to be honest. The make of the valve is a acl-lifestyle, the number on it is 679H340-30L0. Is this a common one or not? and any ideas if I can get one from B&Q 0r Travis Perkins at all please, with a view to trying to change just the motor part of it. Sorry to be a pain to you all. Thanks every-one, Phill.
  4. When we had our 2 german shepherds we used pet plan. Seemed to be O/K.
  5. It appears to be working at the minute, but I think that I will get a valve to change the top part if it does a woblly again. I will keep you informed. Thanks so much for the help and advice, I was starting to get a bit worried to be honest.
  6. Right then I hope that this works. 3_port_valve_004_resized.bmp 3_port_valve_002_resized.bmp
  7. I've just taken the cover off and erm moved the metal arm on the valve, changed over to just heating and it fired up the pump and the boiler. The rads are getting hot now. I'm going to change now to both H/W and C/H and see what happens. John will get a picture in a few minutes and send it to you. I'm hoping that the motor on the valve was just "stuck". Back in a while.
  8. Right, just been upstairs and had a look at the valve in the airing cupboard and I can't see the make, (ti is fitted with the plastic cover away from me and I can't get my fat body in far enough to see the graphics on the lid) but it looks very similar to the one that John sent the link to. Huge Vitae, it's got one single cable/flex coming out of it that goes to the wiring center thing if that helps to narrow it down. Reading the info on the link John, I may be able to change just the top part, and I may even be able to alter the position of the diverter using Huge Vitae suggestion. PLEASE you stupid valve spring into life for me, (if only) The reason that I had to alter the timer by the way is that we had the power off for an afternoon, well nearly all day to be honest and it was the first chance that I have had to take a lookat it and change it. I hope that it is just pure coincidence that it's gone down at the same time. The only part that bothers me is if I have to do a full drain down to replace it, but looking at what you guys think I may be able to get away with just the motor itself change. Would I be able to gte one from say Travis Perkins or B&Q
  9. Hiya, can any-one help me with this one please? On my heating/ hot water system I had to reset the timer at the week-end, now all I can get is central heating when I turn the tank thermostat up. Now then, it has got a three port valve near to the tank, and this is in the central position which SHOULD give both hot water and central heating, (the lower position gives just central heating whilst the upper position gives just hot water). When we put just central heating on the programmer we don't get any and the three port valve still stays in the central position. If I turn the room stat up it still doesn't make any difference, still no heating. If iput the hot water on only the same result, so I assume that it's the 3 port valve. Any ideas to the contrary please? If it is the 3 port valve can it be changed be me, or is it under the regs that I can't and will have to have a plumber out to it. If I can do it my self how difficult is it to bleed the air out of a fully pumped sytem. It by the way isn't a combi boiler but a fully pumped system, the boiler is a Baxi solo 4 years old. Help it's getting mighty cold in my house, even tho' it's fully double glazed and has just had cavity wall insulation fitted.
  10. Yep I've fallen in. I was fishing on the river Witham a few years ago with my brother on law and the bank gave way, down I went straight up to my waist. Every-one was laughing even me as it was summer time, so not too cold, but cold enough. When I pulled my self up and out of the water, I got to the top of the bank and slipped straight back down into the same spot of river. I was fishing a lake local to me once, when a chap arrived with his son over on the other side. They set up on a double peg with a large landing stage on it. The young lad was the first to set up, but couldn't get a bank stick in, so dad tried for him. The bank stick wouldn't go in so he really pushed on it whilst bending over the edge of the landing stage. The obvoius happened, head first in the lake. We, over on the other side couldn't stop laughing, but when his son shouted at him "mind my rod, you'll break it" we were in histerics. On the other lake their my mate fell in, wearing wellies a big wax coat etc. He seemed to be gone for ages, and when he came up to the surface we pulled him out. His wellies had got thick black silt on them, he said that you go down to the bottom really quick, but it seems to take for-ever to get back to the surface. He is by the way a really good and strong swimmer, but with his wellies etc on he struggled, had it been me I think that I would have been in real trouble. A while later he said laughing " I was plumbing the depth, and yes it is 16 feet deep" That made us feel a little better but, but it still worries me that he could so easily have drowned.
  11. I'm in the same general area as John, (working in the same village that you live in John). Count me in if I can help.
  12. Thanks corydoras. That brings back how to do it, it's a long time since I had to do any long division. I also learnt that you can get into the calculator from the start button, I aways went the long way round it, going into all programmes, accessories, then calc. Thanks for the TWO things that you helped me with.
  13. John you are 100% correct with the decimal point being familiar to most people, it does however start to break down if thats the wording for it in certain circumstances. This is going to be difficult for me to explain what I mean so bear with me on this if it isn't very clearly worded, (me being thick ) For instance 1/3 expressed as a decimal .333 recuring, but as a fraction is always constant. If for example 21/27, how do you work out the decimal of that? I can't for the life of me remember from school how to do it. I can remember common denominators etc but alas. I think I'm a bit too long in the tooth to go to school to learn them again, but...................... A lot of it that I need to do is based on imperial measurements so the decimal equivalents charts in my old Moore and Wright micrometer book (now nealy 40 years old by the way, got it when I first started as an apprentice) comes in really usefull for some of the less regularly used equivalents, and for Imperial to Metric and vice versa conversions. I hope that lot makes sense to you, I know what I mean Thanks for the help and advice every-one.
  14. Can fractions be done, so that math can be applied in any way? I don't as it happens need to do any in this excersize, but it may be usfull to know if it can and how in the future.
  15. Than you for your reply's. They will help me a great deal thanks.
  16. Hiya every-one, can any one point me in the right direction here please. I need to make a sheet of various data and text all in the same table, in it there needs to be some numbers expressed as fractions, not in decimal I'm afraid, but it looks awfull when I put it in, E.G. 1-1/4". What I want to do is to leave the whole number as full size text and then the fraction, half size as it is normally expressed. How do I set my P.C. to recognise a fraction please. Thanks in advance, I know that if it can be done then someone on here will know how to do it.
  17. A taser may not be legal in the UK, but what about a cattle prod. "Yes your honour there was all these big 'orrible cows near to them poor hunt sabs, so I went to 'elp 'em and those three gentlemen jumped in the way of me cattle prod, that I take with me 'coz I'm affraid of them cows, and I er accidently caught them"
  18. I always carry mine with me, just in case either I need to get in touch with home, or they need to get in touch with me. They can be a pain, the way that some folks use them all the time, with the constant calls they receive and the annoying and way too loud ring tone, and the shouting they seem to do. And why is it, when they receive a call they can't sit or stand still, do you have to walk about to make them keep up good reception? or are they a bit like the old style watches that wound them selves up with the movement of your hand, and this charges the batteries?
  19. Hiya every one, bit of a cheeky question this one is,but has any one got such thing as a 1/4" B.S.F. split die that they would be prepared to let me borrow or buy from them to cut treads on 2 small studs that have to make. They do unfortunately have to be B.S.F. as they screw into a small machined steel block. I will of course pay any postage etc for the loan of the die. I can't find one to buy locally or that would be my first option, so I have ask if I can borrow. By the way I didn't tell you what it's for, it's so that I can make a spacer to fit a metric micrometer dial to the cross slide on my english lathe, as I have a couple of jobs to make up on it that are metric with metric screw cut threads on them. Thanks every one
  20. I had a nice enjoyable day today, I went to a small lake that I'm a member of to have a bit of a change and fish on the float. I got there and was totally alone on the lake, had a quick look round and decided that I would fish the nearest peg to the car park as it's a little bit more shaded, with the sun directly behind me with the trees cutting the sun right down making it comfortable. All the carp were on the top as I had expected, but guess who forgot to bring any floating baits, even though he had said to the good lady that "I must remember to take some floaters in the morning when I go fishing" Anyway I digress, I set up using a clear crystal self cocking float, size 14 hook set to over depth, cast and tightened up the line so that just a bit of the top of the float was showing. 5 mins max just as I was having a drink the famous flask bite and yep I missed it, cast again to the same spot but it had spooked the other fish so I just left it and waited for them to get their confidence back. After about an hour another take, only this time I conected with it. What a beautifull fight from the fish on the float rod and float tackle, a few mins later a lovely common in pristine condition of arond 4 lbs in weight, slipped over the rim of the landing net. I was a really refreshing change for me to catch carp on the float tackle rather than 2.75lb test curve carp rods, bait runners etc. It was my only fish on the bank today as I packed up shortly afterwards due to the weather getting to hot for me to carry on and being uncomfortable. I really did enjoy just having the one fish, and will be looking forward to going again in the VERY near future to do the same again fishing on the float for the carp.
  21. I've never had to take any myself but heard sometime ago about salt tablets, are they readily available, and do they get the salt intake that you need with out making you thirsty as I would have thought table salt on your hand would? If I remember rightly, thick urine is another sign of dehydration, along with a very yellow colour to it. I have to drink lots of liquid because of a medical condition so am finding it quite hard to keep up with the amount that I probably need as I feel full with liquid (I can't drink alchohol, so just water squash etc at home, boring or what?) If the next stage is a national emergency it shows how fragile the human body can really be. Just as an aside to this, I remeber a programe on T.V. that said the rate of violent crime rises at a particular temperature, and then decreases again over another even higher temperature.
  22. Just been reading in a motor home/camper van manual and it says that if it's not sealed from the inside air, then it will be a bit warm for it to work correctly. It also say's that thre should be a scoop as you called it to direct the warm air from the heat exchanger to the outside of the vehicle, so drawing cooler air in from the outside. P.C. fans are 12 volt then, I should have asked you that in the first place shouldn't I. Are they easily obtained? P.C. shop should sell them do you think. After your advice and reading the book again, I think I may try to get the scoop thing made up and fitted. The air temp in the garage is about 30degs to-day so it may just be too hot for it too work? Chesters, with your knowledge of this I may even be able to solve this. Will the p.c. fans use much power, i.e. will they run the battery flat fairly quick, only the interior lights, water pump etc run on this aswell. I can't fit a leisure battery as theres not a place to put it so have to rely on a car battery, using the 240 for most other things, T.V. D.V.D etc, for the good lady you understand It's a Talbot Express, Auto Sleeper, 4 berth. Hot and cold water, shower, (did have a fridge) etc. I'm not saying this because it's mine but in very good condition, not a bit of rot etc.
  23. Thanks Chesters. I've tried it in the garage on mains and 12v to no avail, so am thinking that it's up the swanny. Before I tried it in the garage I did have look at all the flue thingy but it was good and clean. I am looking at just what you said about the fans, but putting one in the vent at the side of the van, drawing the outside air in from below the fridge (theres a vent hole there below the fridge), and out through the top. Hopefully that will give me better cooling. The heat exchanger tubes at the back get extremely hot no matter what means of heating I use 12v 240v, or when it was in the van gas. I don't think that it can be regased either, there,s no a means of getting into it, as far as I can see, all welded/brazed joints etc. Any other Ideas? Please.
  24. Fit a Kenlowe, it saves on fuel too. I put one on my Discovery and it made a vast difference to the fuel consuption. Engine was always cool as well, AND the heater was brilliant.
  25. The windows on the inside of my Mondeo get dirty, seems to be more so than any car I've had without air-con. But couldn't say 100% for sure that is the reason for it tho'. The polen filter is under the wipers and is a bit of a pain to change, wiper arm off, then a panel etc so I have never changed it (bet it's nearly blocked by now)
