  1. same as the float paternoster 2 except use powergum for the rotten bottom(stops the float being pulled under as much) attatched to runring use a 4 oz weight. i dont use an uptrace instead opt for a 24" trace. if ur powergum to weight is longer than 24" say make it 30" u will then be fishing ur bait 2 and a half foot off the bottom. hook yer bait headfirst and strike at the earliest indication as a pike can swallow a bait on the spot when fished like this.
  2. what kind of water sare u fishing? are u fishing from boat or bank? is there any wadable bays by this i mean larger areas where the water is around 4ft. what size are the pike in the water just an average will do.
  3. Hi you could try fishing a float paternoster. line to trace. powergum stopknot-bead-inlinefloat-runring-bead-swivelclip-trace. tie a weight to the runring with powergum longer than ur trace use a 4oz weight and fish close to the bank with rodtip in air to hold the line up out the water. good luck

    Lob worms

try injecting the lob with air and fish it ledgered so the worm floats like poppin up a pike bait
  5. i put one in the daily record 24,1/2lb pike wish i hadnt. as i lied about the venue giving a venue i thought noone would go to,i knew the venue i named had some good sized doubles to be had. I was asked not to reveal the actual water the pike got caught in by the people who invited me. people went to the water i said but they also asked me for advice which i couldnt give them then i find out that more people probably knew of the big pike than people who actually knew of the water area i mentioned tbh i wish i just photographed it and kept my mouth shut. the lyin wasnt worth the rod n reel. thankfully i dont think the water seen any pressure that would effect its fishing but i daont know for certain.
  6. what one is it andy ur pretty confusin there. in general silver fish fishin yes a spade end i do believe is better than an eyed hook for the number of bites anyway. will it work for carp i dont know maybe on heavily fished waters. need give it a try good question.
  7. if you fish with rod tips up fish a sliding float paternoster set over depth as for the weeds dunno how to help wi them i would change swim personaly.
  8. sounds like a great idea to me chopped up lobs, fish cant resist the smell but as you say not wantin to feed them 2 much i will try it soon whilst fishing a lob worm injected wi air will let u know how i get on. ucould also add a little cotton wool either side of it for pakin purposes.
  9. Hi I dont think u would be to far off wi a marker float just depends the actual angle it comes up to the surface at. I know what u mean though it niggles at yer head eh not knowin. from what ive been reading 30-60ft seems a good area to cover there is a few fish caught deeper but i think the most are to 60ft. thanks very much for the repies on this and the other threads i think im about ready for some deepwater trollin bring on january. Also as no-one seems to have tried deep trwlin dawgs if it work with the dipsy i will let u know if it dont i will try wi just adding a big lead. why dont they make a trollin dawg just need one wi a big heavy head but still soft on the outside. cheers.
  10. Thanks again for the clearly explained info this is invaluable at the moment. Pike fishing lazy aye right then amazing the amount of folk who believe this though think i'm about sorted with the questions for a bit but if anythin crops up i will be sure to ask thanks again
  11. Hi thanks agin for the quick reply A downrigger does look simpler but at 200 quid i think i may try get some experiance with a dipsy first incase i dont stick with it Ive got to budget a bit as unfortunately im unemployed at the moment but i dont go to the pub or gamble so any money i can save goes to my fishin luckily the benefits we recieve these days makes this possible without havin to buy the nasty stuff. Just wondering if u have tried trolling either dawgs or magdawgs with a dipsy? does it work or does the dawg cause the dipsy to flip? I'm hopin to be ready for january gona try the moonphase this month n target feeding pike wi baits but want to be deepwater trollin next month. These are the rods I have been recommended from p&p forum Daiwa Wilderness 8 6"ft med heavy £31.20 or the 9'6". these look the biz to me and at a very reasonable price. Also what is the best way to notice a take when trolling as i usualy hold the rod what are u looking for when using rests do u set the drag do u watch the rod tip do you do both or can u attatch somethin at the reel like the elastic band idea for deadbaitin any tips at all I seen a trout salmon trollerman using like a bit of mild steel on a hinge to his boat with the line placed between a velcro strap n when he got a bite it pulled the line out only prob with this is it was his own boat so he couls permanently secure it on unfortunately im using hired boats. leadcore: what length are u usually adding does it make a significant difference i will be using 65 or 80lb powerpro can i use this straight through??? phew this just keeps throwin up more questions...Many thanks Andy
  12. Hi thanks for the replies think for the deeper water I'm goin to try some trollin with one of they dipsydivers just need find a rod to suit now?????Budgie did you not have much success trolling 30ft as this was my next approach 30,35,40,45 n hopefully 50 just to cover the ranges we cant get baits to as we can only really anchor in 30ft water max. Just remember also Ive had pike in 35ft of water off the bottom at lomond totaly gone from my memory there. Has anyone any experience with a dipsydiver n do u think it would take a magdawg down.(should this be another thread?) Thanks again for the quick responses we only got 4 months a cold weather left i need to learn fast. noodle 90 ft now that scary u mustve had about 300ft of rope were u told the pike were there or did u just take a chance just it seems a lotta effort just to be takin a chance how long did u fish it was it 1 fish for a long time spent i.e more than a day session. or did u only fish it once and catch that fish. have u fished they depths again with any results?
  13. ok so it winter time and the pike should be in deeper water but how deep? After blanking yeterday from 10ft of water to 50tf. I rarely fish deeper than 20ft btw. I'm just wondering what is the deepest uv had contact with a pike now this must have been on the bottom or the deepest uv had a float set. Mine is only 17ft but was floated over 70ft of water. So how deep do they go????
  14. you dont know much about the water ur goin to fish i take from ur post so try what i say if it full of jacks it gona catch them if it full of big uns it will catch them also and if yer gettin to cold bring yer rods in and change swim if yer happy in that swim stick it out. look for a point in the land where it meets the water if there is one start there if not fish anywhere except extreme shallows at this time of year.
  15. i take it one a the mods gona preview thi but 2 hours and a post still not up ive sent it again incase u didnt like the fact i told him to use any rod. if it normaly takes this long for all users i apologise but come on 4 pages of **** and still noone has told the lad how to fish. do peaople just enjoy readin their unuseable crap that is totaly away from the initial thread topic. my original post that ive sent twice yet it wasnt posted. In reply to ppost number 1. go buy urself some 18lb line, 4oz weights, 18" wire traces and some beads fish it running ledger. go to ur water and fish it as long as you can if u catch a pike great if not try another swim next day. like buses eh wait forever then get 3 at one time.
  16. go buy some 18lb line some 4oz weights, 18" traces and bait go to ur water pick any swim fish it as long as you can if u get pike result if u dnt try another swim next tme. gdlck
  17. go get urself some 18lb line some 4oz weights some beads and some 18" traces use whatever rod n reel u wish as long as the spool on the reel gona take enough 18lb line and some bait. go to ur water cast them in sit as long as you can bear if u get a pike bril if ye dont ten try another swim next time. hope this helps.
  18. Yes I was going to change the title but why imo the forums are full of "experts" people who offer advice from their own experiances. Thanks for the replies I think I was just really annoyed at a bait being left in the water tbh I would have taken a deephooked fish as opposed to a bait lying in the water. Andy you should have told him he MUST change his line before going fishing again after that if he never well it would be his fault this is what i assumed happened but after blaming him ,you then told me not to blame him but to blame you. I took him to that water for a reason as it is a hard water to fish and if any water was to test gear it would be that. He seen what happened, he left a bait in the water, i explained how this would almost certainly result in a dead pike i also told him to change his line before going fishing again. He NEVER so the same thing could happen again because he never listened. Point is 18lb line straightens hooks 12 doesnt. In no way was i trying to make u look stupid your knowledge of all round fishing amazes me at times and if u think 1 msg on a forum is goin to make u look stupid you need to wake up, Andy Macfarlane is someone widely recognized as a reliable source of technique or skill whose faculty for judging or deciding rightly, justly, or wisely is accorded authority and status by their peers or the public. That sounds more like you so i just put you from stupid to expert in one message though u would probably believe u were stupid before u would accept being an expert.
  19. still think it was bad advice bud specially for a beginner as i said it only takes one brick covered in silt to create a problem but we'll leave it at that. peace.
  20. Hi some of you guys have been promoting pike safety and helping beginners from before I even began pike fishing. Now over the years u must find urself repeating a lot of the same thing which is great when people listen but from my experiance they are the few for example I went fishing with a guy keen as to start piking and he been sea fishing for years so i though this should be quite easy. Anyway he went out with another experianced angler who told him rigs setup etc. stating 15lb line is a minimum i would recommend 18lb so i took him to a water containing mostly jacks but with the odd double and it also a good water for testing gear bad banks rocks etc. so we got to the water and he informed me he only had 12lb line i couldnt exactly say your no fishin as we had traveled a fair bit........first snag he gave a pull paperclip opened and weight fell off cool no probs he listened to advice and his rig was safe.........next snag this time not so good hooks never straightened and line snap leavin a baited trace and god knows how much line in the water so i explained to him this i why the need for 18lb line i also stated that it would probably result in a dead pike i was gutted but thought hey he has now witnessed it with his own eyes surely he gota learn fast now n replace his line before even contemplating goin fishin. 1 week later he sends me a msg hi andy fancy fishing tomorrow so i ask im if he got his line sorted and was sorry i couldnt attend.....get a reply no i havent changed my line but im goin to such n such a place n it aint that snaggy ....FFS it only takes one brick learn from mistakes especially if they could have been avoided in the first place 3 reels filled for under a tenner 18lb sensor simple I even offered to go get it for him a 30 mile round trip for me but i would have done it no probs. anyway after the rant I'm just wondering how u guys stick with it after all these years my hat goes off to you as it must be easier just to concentrate on yer own fishing though i think i will continue to advise folk as to find that 1 who listens and then may pass the info onto his friends would make it worth while.(ive now calmed a bit) peace.
  21. That is a good result bud 9days and the hooks sttll not totaly in the gut gdgd keep us informed I may recommend this to beginners myself as hooking baits in the head although safe it does mean a great deal more dropped runs so keep me informed of yer strike rate please. .
  22. Cheers bud, I dont think a bottom end float will work the water im gona be fishing gets a bit choppy so i think an inline would be more suitable as this way i can keep the line lifted off the surface of the water so it dont get dragged with the waves. My mate has just informed me he's got some inline sea floats think im gona give these a try. Thanks again for yer reply.
  23. I had my pb rudd 2,3/4lb whilst fishing for perch on a lob hooked in the head then injected with air and ledgered on the bottom this was the middle of winter and I think was only 1 of 6 fish caught between 3 of us on a water that in summer is a bite a throw. Good luck
  24. Hi I,m gona be doin some baits from a boat just wondering if these are any good fished overdepth as the water can and no doubt will be a bit choppy anyone any experience with them. I have inline sliders but they can be pulled under if it gets to choppy just wondering if these would be better. Thanks in advance.
  25. Alos if u think bait presentation is important some do some dont i do though prob just a confidence thing. If ye hook it in the head then put a bit of balsa wood in through its arse tied to first treble with a bit of pro-leader the popped up bait gona sit in water with its head facing the bed like a feedin fish sure it gona be upside down but ye cant have everythin. Also before pushin in balsa it better to clear an openin with w suitable sized drill bit thus avoiding just pushing insides of fish about which normaly results in the stomach bursting.
