  3. Newt, et al., I've just found this article about lure-fishing for large-mouth bass here It's about lure-fishing for them in Continental Africa, and what I'd like to know, please, is whether this advice applies equally well to the USA Thanks in advance DG

Because, be warned, HPPE Spectra and Dyneema braids are not immortal, despite what some marketing companies would have you believe. You can't dye HPPE so the colour is applied as a surface pigment and this wears-off in quite a short time. As for colour when lure-fishing .... don't worry abart itt! If you're interested, there's a review/article about it here  DG
  5. Well done. You'll never forget that first zed! I don't totally agree with Budgie that e.g. wt for wt .. they're not brilliant fighters compared with pike ..... some are indeed like a wet flannel, but others I've caught have gone clucking-mad .... up, down, left ..right ... up in the air .. I found this pic which I thought you might like to see to remind you of that first zed .. ________________ ... keep on zedding ! DG [ 23. April 2004, 11:45 AM: Message edited by: The Diamond Geezer ]

There is no sensible argument to support smoking unless, when those smoking-related diseases arise, you toddle-off to your own desert island and die, rather than burdening the NHS with costs in excess of your contributions over the years. Barbequed food is another source of carcinogens to avoid, if you're interested, and, as someone who actually did the scientific studies, avoid burnt toast too .... but then again, you don't care do you? Alcohol, they say, is OK in moderation. I say ethanol (ethyl alcohol) is hepato-toxic i.e. wrecks quite an important organ, your liver. Obesity falls into the same category i.e. of self-inflected health problems, but certainly not someone who's unemployed. Maybe some alcohol's got in the way of some clear thinking DG [ 22. 10. Don't talk to me about birthdays! I think I'm nearly as old as Den The Poledark this year. And I see your memory's already going, Elton, and at your tender age! I bet you feel Den's age though, after running AN for all these years. Well done, and Thanks .... few REALLY know what it involves Here's to the next 5 years DG

Nice one! Of course you only ever really need medium/high BS lines because of exactly the snags you mention; a 4 lb tench in water, with its swim-bladder to keep it in neutral buoyancy weighs nothing, of course. What you fight against are its muscles, and tench are strong. I once witnessed and have never forgotten a Match angler in Norwich using a pole and 2 lb elastic and a single maggot of a size 22 hook ... safely tussle-with and net a .... 21 lb pike. I wish I had that skill! Nice tench of yours ... now to put a 1 in front of that 4 lb Well done! DG [ 22. April 2004, 08:25 AM: Message edited by: The Diamond Geezer ]

Also get bandits removed from companies and locked-up wherever and wheneven appropriate, usually for fraud, a criminal offence under the Theft Act. Sadly a few escape by legging-it abroad, outside the EU e.g. Asil Nadir. I still track them down , though, in foreign parts, and get some fishing in too while I'm about it Also love to feel the collars of anglers fishing without an EA Licence and/or fishing on my clubs'(plural)waters without a Club book or Day-ticket. Not like the Sea of Galilee in the old days, hey I'd also like to get some of these fishing-tackle bandits banged-up for years of deception and taking money under false pretences, but to-date, all we do is to hand our File on the bandit(s)to the Local Trading Standards guys .. who win some and lose some Interestingly the highest profile case that was a success related to rods, so it's not just lines that abound with false claims. Now, back to your being a fishing vicar (notice the use of the gerund there, you of all people should be able to most easily adhere to the title of what was probably Dick Walker's best-known book DG P.S. I also like to keep a close eye on Fishing Clubs and Societies and their Committees, especially vis a vis their claimed expenses and Annual Accounts if and when they're published False expense claims and false accounting is a criminal offence ... bang 'em up, I say! .... Clubs' & Societies' assets are owned and paid-for, inter alia, by Members' Subs. Sequestering Club assets without intent to return promptly (e.g. computer equipment) is theft. ____________ Who's next ?! I suppose Jesus wasn't a graduate, so anything must be OK ... and for £1 donation to my local church, a question for you "What language did Jesus speak? DG
  20. This should be essential reading for all anglers .. or forever hold your peace. It's hardly self-certification because the tests are carried-out by an independent ISO-standard laboratory ... and actually, the charges seem more than reasonable compared with what a lot of labs around the world charge ... but of course not a lot of line marketing companies would know that  not ever having used an independent lab to test their products Some cheap-skate companies & con-merchants even prefer to test their lines in the MD's kitchen (e.g. rubbing lines over the edge of the table or a house-brick to check abrasion-resistance) and make their claims based on that .... They're having a laugh, of course, and at anglers' expense  Vive independent line-tests, carried-out via EFTTA or whomever ... and eventually we may get some BS-free claims _____________________________ BS standing, of course, not for Breaking Strength! . . _____________________ And as for any effect on prices, please note that Shakespeare, hardly noted for rip-off prices, and who have been one of the most profitable and truly professional tackle suppliers for decades, obviously have nothing to hide vis à vis their product claims, being 100% behind the scheme ....... not so Messrs BS Crêpe Label Brands Inc! I'd still like to see a Use Before Date on all spools, and more advice on how to store lines before use. DG [ 21. April 2004, 12:17 PM: Message edited by: The Diamond Geezer ]
  21. quote: Originally posted by Newt: Crankbaits - usually Rapala has a nice low price and they tend to run properly so I can recommend them. Yozuri and Luck Craft both make outstanding lures but you pay for the higher quality. Spinner baits - if you (whomever) plan to use them long term, I'd suggest getting ones with titanium wire. Initial cost is higher but they perform well and last well. Stainless steel wire needs adjusting often (to continue running right) and will fail after a few months hard use. More info Here. Soft plastics - Crayfish and leech would both be good up where your friends plan to fish. Thanks very much, Newt DG
  22. quote: Originally posted by Newt: My general/usual/go-to rods are 7ft medium action with a round baitcast reel and 30lb powerpro line. I'll generally have a pair of those and maybe 3 or 4 more specialized rods/reels. Lures - depends on the season of the year, the water conditions, how much I feel like concentrating on the fishing and how hard I want to work. For instance, soft plastics are probably the best performers but you really have to pay attention to them or miss the fact that you've been bit. Crank baits generally let you know when a fish hits the lure but they require the most physical effort. Spinner baits are probably my best compromise lure and lazy sod that I am, the ones I use the most. If I were interested in getting the most and the largest fish all the time, soft plastics would be it. Thanks for that, Newt. Care to recommend some Brand Names of a) soft plastics crank-baits & c) spinner-baits, please ?: DG

Not many people on AN seem to come from West Berks. It's really interesting to hear Chris P's fishing reports Yup, you're right, but I travel both closer ( Essex, Reading ) and much further afield to many other venues where the fishing is as good or even better e.g. Kent, Sussex, Dorset, Norfolk, ... Wales ,,, Ireland ,,, Scotland etc etc yes .... the free stretch in Newbury does attract a lot of anglers. Yup Chris's reports are ace. It'd be my guess that several ANers do fish your area, but not all post or boast They keep very quiet .... about their big chub, big perch and big barbel, and the locations ..
