1. If you're worried that paying too little may not get you a good rod, why not get one from Max Ripp-Off Rods Limited ... then you'll be sure to catch ... maybe only a cold, though .... through the nose which you have just paid DG P.S. I think your mate's talking about a Conoflex Max Carbon Composite rod, which go for up to 200 squids, full, new , retail for e.g. the 12 ft 9 inch 147 FS Max [ 20. Has anybody ever fished it and what is the best method to fish float or ledger? Many thanks, Steve. --------------------------------------------------------- Cheers, Julian
Well, they have a website here I haven't fished there for ages but I think you mean Stowbridge (not Stowmarket) which is near Downham Market .... see here Here's what they say about the fishing, viz. As a venue for a fishing holiday Woodlakes is hard to beat. Its five tranquil lakes which cover 30 acres in all were formerly gravel pits and have been used by anglers for over 50 years. All the lakes are stocked with an array of coarse fish, most of which are descendants of the original stock. One of the notable attractions of Woodlakes is the fabulous coarse fishing. All the lakes are well stocked with an array of fish including Carp (up to 30lbs in weight), Roach, Tench, Bream, Rudd, Perch, Pike and Eels. There is the spectacular 12 acre Championship Lake (reserved for residents only to fish) which offers the patient angler some superb coarse specimens including Common and Mirror Carp reaching 25lbs, Bream reaching 12lbs, Tench reaching 10lbs along with Perch, Roach and Rudd. Guests staying in our Norwegian Log cabins overlook the 8 acre Coarse Lake and have the luxury of being able to fish straight from the private swim in front of their cabin. This lake also boasts a wealth of fish including common, mirror, leather, linear and ghost carp. One of our regular visitors reeled in 287 pounds of carp in just 12 hours last year. For those after easier fishing there is the 4 acre Two Pole Lake with an abundance of Common and Mirror Carp weighing into double figures, whilst not forgetting our 2 smallest lakes The S Pit and The North Lake. The S-Pit runs parallel to the Two Pole lake. Here you will find a good head of fish including common carp, bream, tench, perch and roach. Its hidden swims provide a tranquil spot to while away the hours watching the wildlife and birds that frequent Woodlakes. Finally there is the North lake which holds carp, tench, roach and rudd, and again this lake provides a peaceful spot to relax. DG

 6. Hmmmh ... nice! I agree with lubing, but the varnish on the veneer is another thing to watch. I ended-up using teak oil on an old wooden star-back reel that I've got somewhere. So, soon, you'll be Elton Wallis DG

 9. Depends what you want to use Iron Silk for ... and I don't have data for all Breaking Strengths .. but take, say, 12 lb BS as good carp mono BS .... Iron Silk's claims are mainly cobblers .... comparing these parameters: Measured BS (cf, Claimed), Wet-knot Strength, Diameter/Tenacity, Abrasion-resistance index and cost, Iron Silk comes 9th out of 10 lines that included much better lines such as Drennan ESP, Fox Soft Steel, Nash Bullet, Shimano Catana and others. I've also heard/read that Iron Silk has big memory and coiling problems (i.e. not very supple) at low temperatures. SUMMARY: Give it a miss. DG
 10. You won't regret it ... for sure! You just got to forget that wrist-action ( ) and use your fore-arm ... as an extension to the rod .. and don't let anyone start you off with a 12ft rod ... a 9-footer will do just fine. Got to admit that I'm more than a tad surprised that an angler of your calibre, experience (and age ) hasn't mastered most forms of fishing! After-all you're ace in most saline and fresh water methods, in both hemispheres DG P.S. This article maybe be of interest/help. [ 13. March 2004, 08:51 PM: Message edited by: The Diamond Geezer ]

Truth is I've not actually used one ....but if the other Okuma reels are anything to go-by, they should be good value for money with good performance. Although I treated myself to a Youngs Purist 'pin after years of waiting, I still rate my cheapo Lewtham 'pin.
