  1. I'm no expert either but recently tried my hand off the rocks in Cornwall for the first time using a WF9 intermediate. My logic was that there was less chance of disturbance through wave action as the line was just below the surface but that I'd be shallow enough not to snag on rocks and week in the final stages of retreive. I got one small bass in an hour or so of fishing using a sandeel fly (see the sea forums for advice on flies). Great fun!
  2. Whilst down there I confirmed that much of the best fishing is on the tidal stretches and free. Didn't end up fishing the river but whilst At Lerryn in the evening at high tide the water was boiling with fish surfacing. Maybe next time. Had great fun saltwater fly fishing off some of the local rock marks and managed to get a small Bass.
  3. Managed to get out for an hour so near Looe and hooked a small Bass on one of Snatchers sandeels. Was great fun and can't wait to get back to Cornwall for another crack later this year. Thanks Snatcher

  5. Snatchers sandeels look the biz - quality fly! Thank you.
  6. Does anyone have any advice on where it is possible to fish on the East and West Looe rivers next week - both tidal and non tidal stretches. Particularly interested in where I can fish without a local permit or, if I need one, whether there are opportunities for day tickets. I expect there are some bass in the river and also sea trout and maybe a salmon or two but any advice appreciated. If there are any other small rovers, streams in the herodsfoot area that I could fish for small trout I also be interested in any info. Cheers
  7. Cheers. Will give it a go and let you know how I get on. Have PM'd Snatcher. fshdave
  8. Hi Travelling down to Cornwall next week (near Looe) and am taking some fly gear with me to try fishing off some rock marks. Couple of questions: - Has anyone got a list of flies which are worth getting hold of? I expect there is the potential for a few bass or pollock - I know for a fact there are loads of wrass around the rocks opposite St Georges Island in East Looe. (the glass bottom boat reveals all!) I've seen some "crab" flies on ebay - anyone had any success with these? Finally, can you catch doggies on the fly? Couldn't escape them last year on my normal beach tackle! Cheers

    Heysham

Had a trip there today so answered my own question.

    Heysham

Had a nightmare at Cleveleys in blizzard conditions today, caught nothing. Thinking about Heysham tomorrow. Have had some good sessions on North Wall but wondered whether you can fish high tide with bottom tactics between the rocks and the outfall or further along near the old pier. Also, anyone know if you can parl on the caravan site or is it a mighty trek down the lane. Feel free to pm me! Cheers Dave
  14. Cheers for that Alan. Yes, a small cottasge on the waterfront and about 2 monutes from the Heron from what it says on the website. Can't wait to get down there! We've got a week in Carbis Bay first in June so I'll try to get out on the Island then but the thought of some nice scenic creek fishing sounds good. In terms of sea marks it's a case of finding places where my better half can chill out for a few hours whilst I get the rods out. We had a bit of a drive round Falmouth last year and the area off the road that goes along the seafront near the castle looked as if it might be worth a shout - a bit rocky from what I remember but good access. The spot I'm really desperate to try though is under the Minac - spent an hour or so jealously watching some guys down there last year whilst we were sightseeing the theatre - I know which I'd rather have been doing! Cheers Dave
  15. Hi Staying on the waterfront at Malpas in late August/September. Can any Cornish locals advise whether it's worth having a bash on the river for some flatties or bass? I know there's loads of sea marks round and about but it might just get me a couple of extra sessions if I can nip out the front door while my better half makes breakfast! Cheers Dave
  16. I'm heading for the cornish coast late June (21st) for a week and hope to get a day afloat wreck fishing. definately 2 adults but possibly one enthusiatic youngster. Can anyone recommend a good boat which supplies tackle and bait and gives an opportunity of a decent variety and numbers of fish rather than a day spent waiting for a great white shark to take the bait! Cheers Dave

    Henry who?

I think you mean Chris Yates and Bob James - the series was "A Passion for Angling"... well worth a watch if you haven't seen them. They're the ones - they are good, I agree. Back to basics stuff
  18. Had my day off. Fished 2 hours before high at 5 bar gate (Cleveleys) and 1 hour after on black lugg tipped with squid - nothing doing. Drove up to Arnside and fished the tide out and had quite a few flounder, not of any great size, but it's a fantastic place to fish. Stunning scenery and a great sunset to finish. Sorted!

    Henry who?

http://www.julianshambrook.com/aboutushome.html Got the following from the above link. Jealous or what: Henry Gilbey Henry is a well known face on Angling television in Europe, and only uses rods built by us. Henry spend most of his life fishing and has recently returned from some memorable trips, having caught and released a 165Lb Tarpon and a 300Lb+ Bronze Whaler Shark. We have been custom building Henrys rods for years, and he continues to help us develop and advise on a diverse range of rods for catching large trophy fish all over the world. But he is probably most happy when fishing from rock on the rugged North Cornish coast with a rod specifically built for the purpose by us. ....although he may have wound you up I have to say that when I've seen his programmes on Sky I've liked them. I don't think UK sea angling has a very good profile at all on TV unless I'm missing something so he's about as good as it gets. all of the other programmes seem to be geared at coarse fisherman (Matt Hayes, John Wilson, Andy Little, the men who wear old gear but i can't remember their names) or Australians who kiss fish (maybe that's why he nearly kissed one). There you go, how about one of you experts making a decent uk sea fishing programme (preferably showing how to catch a hard fighting 10lb cod from the beach at Cleveleys) please. Any offers?
  20. Thanks Ian, you've raised a smile. I've got a day off on Monday so maybe I'll go a little further afield. I hear Arnside gives a good day out and you can't fail to catch. Watch this space!
  21. Thanks Harold. I think I'll be in touch before my next session for some advice. Today was fairly unproductive with one very small codling caught on black lugg on the flood. mind you, it was packed on the beach and I saw only 1 fish of any size being landed so maybe it's not just me. I think I'll opt for a night session next! Your comments make a lot of sense - I guess I just need to fibnd the right marks for the state of the tide/weather etc. Dave
  22. Ok, so noting the sound advice about new posters (I have posted before but not that regularly)I've got some specific questions about fishing the fylde coast, particularly around cleveleys/rossall: 1. I read that when it's rough it brings the codling close in to shore because of the food that gets churned up etc. I keep getting excited when it's rough, generally fish black lugg on a 2 hook patternoster (maybe tipped with squid) and lob it as far as I can with a 5ox lead that just about grips (maybe cast 50 yards in a strong wind) and generally catch 20lb of weed a throw whether I fish from the wall at Cleveleys or the beach at 5 bar gate (by Rossall school). Certainly never any decent fish. Where do I go wrong? 2. I thought that fishing a flood tide was the best time and low tides (again Cleveleys/Rossall) weren't supposed to be productive. the last few nights, judging by the number of lamps I can see way down the beach at low tide, I seem to be wrong? Is fishing low tide more productive? 3. I also thought that a very high tide brought more fish close in because the water was deeper (again around the same marks) but read today in Chris Webb's slot in the paper that the high tides have proably been keeping the codling away from the shore and the return of lower tides should bring an improvement. This makes no sense to me - can anyone shed any light? Anyway, there's three hopefull sensible questions for starters and I hope some of you experienced guys (or lasses) out there can help me catch a monster cod tomorrow (daylight high tide and proably in a fairly choppy sea!) Cheers and looking forward to a whole host of good tips which I promise to report back on. Dave
  23. James - I don't consider myself an expert by any means but as a relative newcomer to shore fishing I bought a ron thompson beachcaster last winter and it has done just fine (not that I've had any monster fish to pull in put I have pulled in about 20lb of weed I reckon!) I bought following a decent review in one of the sea fishing mags. It replaced another cheap rod which had not stood up to the job so my advice would be don't buy any old rubbish like I did 1st time round. Dave
