  1. quote: Anyone know what the fishing is like around this area, or more importantly, is there anywhere to fish? There is a very large northern based club that owns and leases many stretches in and around that area . . is it day ticket or membership you are after ??
  2. s'pose I am being a little lazy here . . but was looking for a presentation or publication maybe that would show the average growth rate of the more common fish over their life expectancy. yes I know Carp would be bigger than an A4 page . . but was interested in from fry to say 5 year old for Roach, Rudd, Barbel etc . . with maybe a picture to scale of each size and age fish . . . ? a roach at 1yr, <____>< 2yr <____________>< with maybe pictures instead of measurements etc anyone know of anything along these lines . . ?
  3. Right or wrong guys . . . it has gone . . and never to return . . for me my rod is well and truly in the rest and not in the shed. There again, I haven't been fishing this close season yet . . but have been on 4 working parties since mid March - so maybe I am not all bad eh presently anglers are the only things keeping cormorants off the lakes !
  4. it is easier to catch small fish , , they are not as wise. The skill comes when a bonus fish turns up and has to be landed (although it you play too long an lose it . . you are down on your target) that is what seperates the true matchmen from the weekend fisher men. They need to know how much effort to put on a 1lb bottom to stop say a 4lb carp making for a snag . . as long as you are catching small stuff . . then at least your weight is increasing . . and it is not always the case big bait big fish . . the big ones can frequently be caught on a single pinkie, squat or maggot . .
  5. quote: only one rod and reel spare "just in case" well you will keep chasing those intrepids - why not weigh em all in and buy a new shimano . . then you won't need a spare
  6. alot of it depends on how you feel about it . . if it helps you concentrate and gives you confidence then you are onto a winner. Does it catcha and attract more fish . . nope cos if it did all the fish would have been cuaght on it so mant times already they'd be terrified of the stuff . . I have used it on occasions and it has lead me to catching a bream from one water where they are few - far between and never been caught (although they wash up dead every blue moon) but then again it was spawning season, I was fishing worm over brasem flavoured hemp - and it was in the middle of a thunder storm . . . so you decide . .did it make a difference . . could it make a difference . .
  7. quote: The one thing that sticks in my mind from it is how little we as anglers actually know about fishery management it is a very popular misconception that becuase people can catch few fish and have been on this water and that . . that they are experts in fishery management . .. If you say it was worthwhile then I will go for it . . .. another string to me bow . . at worst . . .
  8. This subject interests me too . .John did you progress on this . . have you started the course ?
  9. the new HQ looks nice but I think it was quite damaging on the whole . . it certainly got my attention . . then when the subscription went up from 10 to 15 quid . .. if they catchme at chatsworth I will probably join again . . and buy the badges . . reading their work they seem to do some good . . if anyone could again post how this ACA steeplechase thing works I would be greatfull . . someone posted before . . but I didn't understand it . .. is there one deffinative group I should be looking at . . to be quite honest there are so many this and that's out there I can find the motivation to find out what they all do . . a general coarse angler . . very heavy on the conservation and fishery improvement side . . occasional matches . . does this bring any groups to mind ?
  10. I have always worked on the top limit tempreture of 8 degrees c for coarse fish (and most fish - bar trout) . . one you get to the end of March - mid April . . the transport becomes an issue to till around back end of October . . plus at this point I am told the resistance to infection is at it's lowest . . Think the EA have a guide line on this . I certainly wouldn't stock anything later than this .. Monday was just about by the skin of our teeth . . saying that though . . had to scrape the ice of my windscreen on Friday morning . .
  11. Last monday lunchtime we stocked a club lake with 200lb of Roach and 250 common orfe to 4 inch . . talking to an angler today, who had been up on Wendesday with his kids and they were catching them already . . bite a chuck but not connecting . . he then went onto squat and pinkie reduced hook size to a 22 and caught the orfe . . had about 30 of em he said . . how soon would you expect to catch fish after stocking . . new introduction to my pond dissapear for weeks (stress / unfamiliar surroundings)before showing .. thought it would be the same for coarse fish in to a club pond too . . anyone got a rule of thumb or add to this ? I know it is very much dependant on food availability, venue, stocking . . but wondered and does it change for different species ?
  12. I was out today . . small pond . . caught about 9-10lb of Roach .. biggest around 12oz .. all on pinkie . . all poor bites . . and one on half a worm too . . nothing remarkable . . . spent about an hour picking up litter around the swims and deconstructing a bridge over the stream some local kids had built . . and pulled out what ever branches I could reach that they had thrown into the lake . . . . fish about 9-10lb . . rubbish two bin liners full
  13. I keep my bait out of the fridge unless really nescessary. What I have found is keeping them in a stainless steel bowl lets them last a lot longer . . any heat created by the grubs is conducted to the steel and then the surrounding air cools down the container . . I use two old dog dinner bowls . . cos if you think about plastic bait tubs are perfect for insualtion . . nearly like keeping maggots in a flask ! Pop to B&Q and get some green minimesh (the sort cut from a roll) think we paid about 6 quid and got enough for 3 riddles (measuirng 24 * 12 inch) knock up a frame and matching box (2) and you are in business . .. I generally use Polenta bought in bulk from the local Asian stores . . this is dirt cheap compared to a bag for a quid from the tackle shop . .
  14. . . it actually looks quite good . . especailly the "delivery performance part"
  15. thanks . . just . . well you know . . buying on the net and that . . cheers
  16. anyone ever bought out from it . . is it any good or just a lead to dissapointment . . what is the trend .. do things dissapear from under your nose in the last few minutes . . or do you normally get the goodies ?? please advise cos there are one or two nice things on there . .
  17. I am a member of one club only . . and quite emnbroidered into the infrastructure . . although sometimes it feels more of a chore than a hobby. Also a member of a syndicate - where I get little or no time to contribute (however - there Idea of contribution is meeting every fortnight in a Working mens club and discussing how things used to be) just got back in this year through lack of commitment bad points . . . . who ME ! John E - funny how quick the milk turns sour isn;t it . . give up all that time, effort and hassle at home (emergency wokring parties etc . .) to find out that a committee can turn on you for mere hearsay . . how many others have had to leave for such offences - namely members . . how the committee backs it balifs on such matters . . I wonder . . Was the guy throwing the biggest bricks in the special meeting stood next to you on working parties - maybe not eh . . but they think that the meeting room is thier best input to a committee (nice, warm, no bad weather to effect lighting their fags . . was beer available ? - hmmm yes know the type, that's when they truly come on form and contribute . . .) Used to be in ACA but baulked a bit at the subscription upgrade . . however they do have new premises - - I am nolonger sure what this and that ACx and NFz do anymore . . maybe they should devise a new governing body to oversee the overseers . . ohhh - see they have. Clubs work well cos they are localised and managed . . the idea I though of the NFx's was to bring them all together as one voice . . but it seems to be too fragmented now . . appologise in advance if I have misunderstood the present setup of the NFx boddies . . but who am I . . but a think northern angler . . "what's that . .tree fallen down . . ang on I'll get me axe !" soz guys gotta go
  18. spray bar and out rigger for the octoplus setup . . got to be the best things I have bought in years . . really does boost your weights, every thing at hand too . . . . not sure who posted the landing net float . . but made one the other day from pipe lagging . . I can not believe I never thought of it before . . brilliant !!
  19. now Kleinboet . . the Clever Claw . . was it that bad . . we took photos of it the other year and it is on our list of "to makes" in our maintenance shop . . should I bother I wonder then ? A foot plate . . took mine off and use two overturned bait boxes . . does the same and at a fraction of the weight . .
  20. It sounds a bit hard as fisheries go, I would suggest not feeding the fish to keep them in one place, but feed to attract and get them used to what you will offer on the day. This time of year I would offer a few chopped worms in one place over the next few days and hope that noone see you . . and get there early on bank hol monday morning . . as it is the day most people dust of the tackle and get going !
  21. yep - addy proves true . . hair rig on the bottom up in the water . . normal hooking . .
  22. Also ben88, forget the mags where they say use the smallest plummet you can get away with. At first it is better to make a big splash and get a true reading rather than messing about with a BB and getting nowhere .. infact I still buy only one size plummet . . the biggest I can find . . this does for waggie, stick and pole plumming . . . the initial splash doesn't spoil the day . . not knowing how deep it is certainly does
  23. I have used black treacle for the last couple of years in Ireland . . the hybrids love it especially fished with corn . . dig around and try and find a shop selling out of date black treacle . . they are fairly easy to find . . it is much cheaper 5p per tin
  24. Westerly and pool bridge both near your have caravan pitches newly applied . . is it a day ticket based water ?
