  1. Hi all. Joined Merchant Navy from school. Spent thirteen years as a deck officer. Left MN when kids were house trained and joined HM Coastguard. Spent thirteen years at several stations around UK. Left CG in 2000 when station in Orkney closed. Took severance pay on the Friday and walked into a job with the local port authority on the Monday. Now am a Port co-ordinator, arranging pilots, tugs and other services for Large tankers visiting Scapa Flow oil ports and cruise liners in the summer. Folk ask me if I miss the Coastguard and I tell them what I do now has "More time off, less responsibility and more money". What's more I work on my own on shifts so have plenty of time to look at AN. Cheers Scapa
  2. I don't want to sound a prig but that amount of money I would hand in to the police. It certainly would not be something no one would miss and I just couldn't stand the guilt. If it was the proceeds of a crime I would expect a reward. Has no-one heard of the crime of theft by finding? Must go and polish my halo. Cheers Scapa
  3. In some of the smaller Isles of the Orkney Archipelego, a sheep tied to a post is described as a Leisure Centre.
  4. You are not alone there Judy. A few months ago I bought a car from a freind, a very competent self reliant single career woman. A few days later I had a flat tyre (luckily whilst at home). Setting out to change the wheel I couldn't find the wheel brace or jack. After a long search I phoned my freind to ask her where it was. "Oh" she said "I never had one, I all ways planned to get a man to do it" Deja Vu or what!!!!
  5. All the best mate. Just keep thinking what you have been taught and what you are doing. To paraphrase the theatrical saying "Break a gearbox" Cheers Scapa
  6. Hi Billy I think you will find this is a hoax. I got caught by it a few months ago and sent a warning to all my address book. I felt pretty foolish when I found out. Check it out on your Anti virus index. Good Luck Scapa.
  7. quote: Cannot believe it but with the help of the car manual I managed to change both ok,and they worked ! Good Job Judy! When my daughter passed her driving test I took her into the yard to show her a few things about the car we would let her use. After explaining the mystery of the fuel tank I said "I'll now show you how to change a wheel." With a look of horror on her face she exclaimed "What on earth for? I'll just get a man to do it!!! 8. quote: No! Spare us from Tom Weir. He comes from the village next door to mine (Gartocharn). I like his hats!! You know what they say about a prophet in his own country I also like Clarissa, now that's a real woman!! Cheers Scapa [ 28. August 2003, 05:55 PM: Message edited by: Scapanapper ]
  9. quote: A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. Hi Newt You are of course aware that the 2nd Amendment was passed in 1791 just a few years after a brutal struggle against a wicked Imperial power!! A risk was still felt that the Fledgling Union was still at the mercy of more highly developed nations. Things have changed somewhat now that the US has the most powerful military organisation on the planet. The 2nd Amendment must at the very least be seen as out moded. Of course properly vetted individuals should be allowed to hold firearms for hunting and controlling vermin. There is also an argument that a citizen be allowed to protect himself, his family and property. However why are private individuals allowed to amass arsenals that could out gun some third world Countries?? I ask as a soft Brit, out of curiosity and don't expect you to answer for the whole of your legal system. Respect Scapa
  10. Jack Hargreaves and Out of Town gets my vote too.I certainly remember watching him when I was a kid, must be about forty years ago!!. I suppose he did a lot to nurture my love of the countryside, especially angling. Another one with a Scottish theme is Tom Wier. His shows from the seventies are some times shown late at night on Grampian TV (I think). He mixes countryside with history in a most entertaining and informative way. Cheers Scapa
  11. quote: All very well but what exactly can you fish FOR in Orkney? Only some of the best wild brown trout and sea trout in Britain. See this. Orkney trout fishing No offence meant guys, I am just reminded of another reason I left Englandshire for some where , where not EVERYTHING is governed by beauracracy to the Nth degree. Come and try it you can use fly, bait or lures there are also lots of fish in the sea. Regards Orkney Tourist Board Cheers Scapa
