  1. Hi all im new to the forum but have been reading it for a while now and look forward to adminstering and recieving advice with everyone. My first query is about fishing for pike in rivers, me and my dad fished a river close to us ( the sow ) last winter with varied results. We mainly used deadbaits and some days were great others awful. However the quality of fishing seemed to be very much reliuant on the weather and conditions so i would appriciate if anyone could tell me what the best (and worst) condtions would be for these pike in a quite small and fast flowing river? Am i right in thinging that although pike are mainly fished for in winter like the majority of fish they will be more active and so feed more the warmer it is? will the river fish best at a high water level or a low one? when the river is clear of coulored? dropping or rising? cloudy or bright overhead conditions? etc Any feedback would be appriciated and hi again, Tim [ 28. 2. thats great thanks ive recorded it a 1lb 5 oz
  3. i would recommend an abu garcia submission, ive got one and its served me well, really versatile with three tips will handle anything from gudgeon up to 15lb carp plus its only about £80
  4. id say 12 to 18 inches would be fine
  5. i would be very grateful if someone knowledgable enough would be able to tell me what they think a 13 inch well bodied pech would weigh? i caught it on my local canal today, but when i tryed to weigh it my old scales registred about 1/4 of a pound?????? so i measured it with the tape measure in my scales. Im keen to know as its obviously a new personal best and want a fairly acuratte idea to record. My gut feeling was about a pound but as ive never caught one half its size im probably way off!!! thanks in advance
  6. i was thinking of going fishing for tench tommorow because as tthe weather is still quite warm it was 15c today i thought they might still be biting. My dad isnt so convienced though, he says because weve already had one minor frost about two weeks ago we wont catch anything. what do you think?
  7. i collect them as well and have these: bronze carp species perch and bream roach bag If i had my own camera i would aslo have: silver carp and species roach 50lb bag during the winter i also want to get pike and chub and next summer tench. after that i dunno, its a really good scheme though and i think it encourages a lot of young anglers. 10. First of all its probably best i point out im 16 and have only been fishing 2 years and so cant really speak about how angling now relates to "the olden times". But what i could say is some of the reasons why (wheter its true or not) not as many young people take up or continue with the sport. One of the first things id say is that as aphace stated, fishing isnt "cool" in my age group. This in its self might put people off, as they cant find anyone to fish with, they feel it might make them less popular and so its easier to tag along with others who follow football etc. And because of this many adults wont let therir kids stay onthe bank all day on their own for whatever reason. I know i wouldnt of been allowed to go fishing if my dad wasnt a angler as my mum was horrifed at the thought, and speaking to some of my mates dads they also find it a bit dodgy. Another thought which relates to this is the fact that as people have said is most people are introduced to fishing though their dads, something which is also seen as sad, i know that as i play golf many kids are willing to play on their own but wouldnt be seen dead with their own dad! and this also puts people off. However the main reason i think less kids might be going fishing is different attidues within the sport itself. the main emphasis is purely on size mainly of carp and so kids feel like they are failing if they cath anything which isnt in double figuries. Many childrens first fish is 10lb + and after theve caught that then what? theres really nowhere else to go and so they give up. When i get home from fishing or tell people about it the first thing they want to know is how big the fish were not how much fun i had which is much more important. Kids go round the water i am a junior baliff at and brag ( probably a load of crap) about 20lb + carp, 5lb perch and 9lb bream and tha was all of one 12 year old kid, to me thats not the attitude to have to enjoy the sport. To me fishing had become too one diamensional you fish for carp, put loads of rods out and wait for a beep then get disappointed when its less than 20lb which the mentaility of modern angling seems to make us believe we should all be cathcing. Its no wonder kids dont keep at it. Im not someone who like my grandad ios happy to fish for gudgeon or 3 oz roach all day, but to me fishing all about new challenges i like to find out what works on one water for one species over maybe a season have 2 or 3 great sessions then move on to a new challenge water, species whatever, that keeps people intrested not some of the fishing newcomers are introduced to these days. phheww that took a long time, hope that gives some of you a new perspective, peace just ma thoughts.
  11. i would recommend maybe using something slightly stronger maybe 6lb as long as there are no snags around. It would also depend what bait you were using as not too many float fished baits ( maggots etc ) would cath the 20lb fish you were talking about. If youre using these baits then 6lb should be fine, if however youre using a big fish bait you might want to go up to maybe 8lb with a loose clutch. hope that helps
  12. Whats the best fish youve ever caught? no nessaraly the biggest the one which fought hardest had a good story etc mine would be a 11lb mirror i caught two foot from the bank on freelined sweetcorn, i had been stalking it quitly for about an hour and it was made better by the baliff who was wathing looking at me as if i was a retard and shaking his head saying youll catch nothing there!
  13. i would think groundbait was anything thrown in which is a different bait than what ws being used on the hook
