  1. I have doubts about fake bread, although I was trying to catch mullet with it. Shame, seemed like a brilliant idea... http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/ubb/ultimatebb...t=001910#000000
  2. Just for reference, went into town today and there is no tackle shop in Leamington The shop where I think you're referring to is now a fancy dress shop, a sandwich bar or a hairdressers
  3. ooh, not buy a shimano reel? don't know about that
  4. Thanks seph, very kind, but I'm without a car at the moment (long story!), so have to keep it local for the time being.
  5. I am about to buy a new reel. It's been a while since I picked up a tackle catalogue and was planning to get a Baitrunner 5010 GT only to find it's all changed, Shimano seem to have more types of Baitrunner than you can shake a stick at and their names have got ridiculously long. Anyway, seems to come down to 5000 GTE vs. 5000 GTE-B. Had a play with the latter, nice, but seemed heavier than my old, now retired to Cyprus Baitrunners. Also, not sure about the new glitzy colour. The two models are around the same price, any thoughts?
  6. I know they don't really count, but I was trout fishing the other day, didn't get a single touch from late afternoons onwards, then at just gone 8pm, 4 fish within about 10 min
  7. Just popped in to Bailey's for a chat. The guy in there was very helpful. Didn't really recommend the Saxon Mill stretch for anything other than roach, he thought the Leamington waters were far more productive. Shame because I liked the look of the former. He also recommended Barford for Barbel which I am lookng into. [ 12. July 2005, 01:55 PM: Message edited by: Sipadan ]
  8. Great, thanks, know the Emscote Road.
  9. I have rods stashed all over the place, but for various reasons, I'm thinking about a change of approach to my coarse fishing and shock horror, limiting myself to just one rod. I'm thinking that a quality 4 piece, 10-12 ft spinning rod or 1.75-2 lb TC carp rod will serve most of my needs.
  10. I think any barbel from the Thames is good going, well done!
  11. I hope I'm wrong about this, but can't find any reference to a tackle shop in Leam on yell.com or in local directories. Seph, have you been to the shop recently? Anyway, next time I'm in town I'll take a look. Thanks.
  12. OK, I must be blind. Lived here for a while and haven't seen a tackle shop, where's it near?
  13. Thanks for the info, I'm just starting to get a feel for the area and have yet to wet a line, unless you include fluff chucking. Don't think there's a fishing tackle shop in Leam anymore
  14. Speaking personally, if I had the choice of fishing a rubbish tip or not fishing, it would be the latter. I know it's harsh, but I have to agree with Colin, if a club allows its water to get in a bad state, then it might be better off in other hands, commercial or not.
  15. I think LSA/RMC had a rule where an angler would lose their membership if ANY litter was found in the swim they were fishing, regardless of whether it was theirs or not. Very sensible.
  16. Hi all, about a year ago I got some very useful advice from Angler's Net members regarding fishing in Southampton. Thank you, it resulted is one or two decent fish (eventually!). www.anglersnet.co.uk/ubb/ultimatebb...t=012440#000000 Have a similar request, I now find myself living in Leamington Spa. Any tips on fishing within close proximity to the town and fishing clubs/associations etc. I've seen some nice stretches of river round and about and saw a large common carp in the River Leam, right in the middle of the town! I'm particularly interested in the stretch to the north of Leamington (Milverton?) close to the Saxon Pub if anyone knows it. I'm into anything that is daft enough to jump on my hook, but pike are the fish that float my boat, closely followed by carp, perch and chub. Still to catch a barbel after 25 years of fishing, so that would be nice. Cheers Andrew
  17. Thanks again. I am UK based, but have very few opportunities to fish when I'm at home , when I can, I'm usually chucking bits of fluff at trout.
  18. Thanks Newt. I think I stand a snowman's chance in hell of finding a Lindy thingie in Cyprus, but food for thought and something to consider for the future. One quick question, do small largemouth bass make good livebaits for the biggies? I think I can guess the answer based on experience of other perch-like species, but life isn't always logical.
  19. Hi argyll In Cyprus for about a month. Shallows are always my first stop and much more interesting to fish. However, I think that the bigger fish might be in deeper water atm, the largest ones that I've had so far have been caught close to the bottom on lures fished straight out in front of me in swims with no apparent features. Spinners and plugs skillfully worked around submerged trees and the like have only produced tiddlers Will give the soft baits a go. Also, can't wait to see what a livebait produces.
  20. Hello chaps, thanks for the advice/opinions. I was thinking about fishing a buoyant lure off the lead, the advantage of this being that it can be worked very slowly and left static without too much fear of snagging - booby style I'm after largemouth bass btw.
  21. No I haven’t gone mad, trying to think of a way catching predatory fish on a lure in deep water at distance. I remember a rig in one of the weeklies sometime ago where a floating plug was fished off a paternoster with a 1 - 1.5 oz bomb at the other end. I don’t see why it wouldn’t work, but the thought of spending a day dragging a lead across the bottom of reservoir isn’t that appealing. What do you think?
  22. quote: Incidentally, catch, kill and eat/dump everything seems to be the policy judging by some of the photos on that site. [/QB]Yes it is. I've seem some stuff which is pretty hard to swallow, like finding a LARGE carrier bag stuffed full of dead/nearly dead carp on the bank right next to the waters edge. Efforts to revive any failed. Likewise, the chap on the website with 103 dead largemouths. I take the odd one for the BBQ, but 103 fish(?), that's just senseless. Litter is another issue, but what can you do when it's not even your country.
  23. I've fished and dived extensively in Cyprus, I'm here now The bad news is that the sea is pretty much wiped out. Fun can be had in the harbours with mullet, usual UK tactics will work, but literally millions of fry/small species will make it very hard work with soft baits. I've only caught golden-greys of up to a 1lb, but don't know if other types of mullet are present. Other species include two banded bream and bass, the latter being the same species found in UK waters. In years and years of fishing, I've caught a few decent fish from the shore on toby-type spoons. If you're very lucky, you might connect with amberjack, barracuda or even a small tuna, but the odds are VERY small. If anyone has had different experiences of Cyprus sea fishing, I'd love to hear about it. A better bet would be to head to one of the freshwater dams for carp and largemouth bass fishing. I've some success with the latter on a ultralight spinning gear this trip, caught 16 in one evening, though nothing larger than 12oz. [ 13. April 2005, 11:44 AM: Message edited by: Sipadan ]
  24. If I was interested in flatties, could I get away with using a carp rod? What size hooks and which bait would you recommend? No boat I'm afraid
  25. Any advice for a novice beach angler who would like to have a crack at Southampton Water. Just looking for something to pull my string and a nice spot to pass the day. Cheers
