  2. Review of Daiwa Sealine SL30SH multiplier Deciding on fishing equipment is important and often tricky because there are so many options to choose from. This review, by Simon Day, is of the Daiwa Sealine sl30sh multiplier reel A long range casting reel. I had a very long gap from using multipliers and I bought this one a while ago. It kept birds nesting so I forgot about it and was using the Abu Ambassadeur series multipliers. Then a couple of weeks ago I saw this sitting on my shelf and thought it might be worth giving it another go after a summer of using level wind multipliers. I wasn't disappointed. First off though this reel is very unforgiving if you cast even slightly incorrectly. The rewards when you get it right are distances which will have you smiling. It is certainly quite easy to get distances approaching and even passing the 200 yard range when cast correctly. It has no level wind but this is a good thing because it means your casting distances are that much further. I stuck an 18lb line on the reel with a 50lb shock leader. If you're like I was and thinking no level wind is a pain I can tell you it honestly isn't much more effort than having a level wind. By the end of one day using it you'll be happily reeling in an even line. By putting up with a manual wind in you'll be adding another 50 to maybe 100 yards better distance. Isn't that worth the effort? You'll hear people say they can cast as far with a level wind, don't believe them! It also has a good casting brake on it which once confident can be taken right down but I would advise starting with full break and slowly working down until you find the best brake-to-cast ratio without the birds nests. With an 18lb line on you'll be able to put a little over 300 yards of line on the reel and the retrieve ratio is 6.1:1. This reel has 4 ball bearings and an anodised aluminum spool for lightness and strength. The only thing I don't like is the bite clicker is very quiet. I guess I'm too used to the Abu Ambassadeur multipliers. The Daiwa Sealine SL30SH is excellent for all shore work, uptiding and a variety of downtide fishing. It's also suitable for fishing over the roughest of sea beds. With a price tag of around £70-£80 it's a very nice distance casting multiplier with a tough build. Daiwa SL30SH Wide spool version of the SL20 with the same 6:1 retreive but extra capacity A popular choice for heavier lines, rock fishing and uptiding. Price: £84.95 Including VAT at 17.5% Veals Catalogue

  13. California Angler Shatters Bass World Record ROLLICK, C.A. (April. 1) - It appears that the early bird might just get more then the worm. Just ask Marc Deliar. The Northern California angler reeled in a world record-breaking Largemouth Bass from Fiction Lake, a small lake in Rollick, CA., on April. 1. The showcase bass, weighing in at 23 pound, 9 ounce, measured 27.78 inches in length and 19.65 inches in girth. Deliar caught his record breaker on a custom rod, using live bait. The fish was weighed on certified scales at The Country Store in Rollick. Positive identification of record-breaking fish often can be a collaborative effort among agencies, as was the case with California's latest freshwater fishing record. While fisheries biologists with the California Wildlife Resources Commission tentatively identified the fish as a Largemouth Bass, it was sent to David Caper, research curator of fishes for the CA. Museum of Natural Resources, to confirm identification. The second confirmation by Caper was a precautionary step taken to confirm identity of species and measurements because of the magnitude of the record being broken. The second confirmation will also assure that the fish is not a hybrid between two closely related species, which may result in higher rates of growth and survival to record sizes. "Because the amount of time that this record has stood and the possible effects in the fishing industry, we never want to take chances with misidentifying a fish," Caper said. The previous world record bass was caught near Jacksonville, Georgia on June 2, 1932 by George Perry. It weighed 22 pounds 4 ounces and was caught from an oxbow lake off the Ocmulgee River called Montgomery Lake. To qualify for a state record, anglers must have caught their fish on a hook and line, must have their fish weighed on a certified scale witnessed by one observer, have the fish positively identified by a qualified expert from the Commission and submit an application with a full, side-view photo of the fish.
