  1. i remember we used to use wire on a penn super mariner and with a modern arms sandetti rod with rollers especially made for wire, did,nt have any problems with tangles it just cut through all the mono.and dacron
  2. mines just got the instructions printed inside the top lid, nothing else
  3. my memory is so bad that i forgot i had the 484 and sold it to buy the 484c,teamed up with a 7000,and for the life of me cant remember how much they cost (rods) i think they were expensive though,
  4. sorry mines was the newer 484c
  5. i have one as well mate, got mine brand new in the seventies
  6. any good 9/10 weight rod,but preferably with a good large arbour reel,we dont want the line jamming on a narrow spool when a 30lber takes a run with your fly
  7. --> QUOTE(Norm B @ Jan 11 2007, 02:36 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Nothing wrong with stainless hooks. There's 2 schools of thought and both are valid IMHO.I have seen the results of both types and I prefer the SS model as it's more fish friendly but no doubt there will be those that disagree with me but that's democracy in action. my outfit was a 30lb class abu rod ,30lb dacron ,with a homemade stainless steel clements boom on it,the dacron was tied onto a stainless corcksrew connector homemade and then a 150lb mono trace about 6ft long with berkley big game swivels at either end, another connector then a trace 1 foot long 150lbwire crimped swivel at one end and aforemention hook crimped on the other, weight was adjusted to suit the tide, plus a good mix of pilchard oil, blood out the slaughter house, and chopped up mackeral was sent down in a cage that was made so the bottom door opened when it hit bottom,we called this mixture rubby dubby,,that is a rough description of my set up in 1974 onwards forgot to say my reel was a abu 9000c
  8. i know that jimmy bone had passed away, not sure about marcel ,tom mccracken and i big maurice dont know about them,it was jimmy and marcels boats i was usually on,,i was a youngster then
  9. as far as i can remember jim has caught a few sharks in his day,,,as you say it is certainly a disaster i dont think she will last long,,the same thing happened with a hotel in new galloway ,he took on the hotel and the first thing he did was bar the anglers ,,he did,nt last long, any i have still got my old boat rods and traces ,but i think i will need to make new ones as i dont think mustad 9/0 stainless steel hooks are tope friendly, thanks for your reply ian,
  10. absolutely fantastic stan, i was beginning to think i was the only guy left that new about or was a member,i can tell you right now my name is not on any of the trophies, havent seen john scott for years ,thanks for that reply you have made my day,
  11. dont think i know him,my memory is not so good, taken a note of your dates and will try and get down ,thanks neil
  12. hi snatcher yeah i have raised this topic before with you ,i hope to get down at the start of the summer season well march actually and start sea angling again ,its been a long while since i wet a line (im a piker now) i have been down a couple of times over the winter just for a visit, the mull club was set up mainly for tope fishing on a catch and release system, and we had about six outings per year plus an open day ,i think in october, at night after fishing the open day we had a buffet and prize giving in the ship, sometimes we would fish port logan or auchen malg never had much success up there ,my memory is fading about catches but to be honest we did blank a lot, maybe that was the hangover from davys hospitality at the ship, i can put some names on but i dont think you will recognise them,me neil lindsay, jimmy bone, davy powell ,jim mclanaghan, john scott, davy welsh, marcel wittebolle the list goes on we were all members of other sea angling clubs ,and individual members of s.f.s.a and e,f.s.a and some of us me included fished at international level,i fished the european tope festival held in tenby where i blanked,,,,so hopefully will get my piking bivvy out and camp down at east tarbert in the not to distant future maybe see you there i have still got the club badge regards neil
  13. seen it tonight, certainly a change from the rest,i see it was shot in september, wonder why, no midges maybe,as usual the scenery was superb,
  14. sad state of affairs indeed, the ship held many happy memories for me,as we used to hold our mull of galloway big game club end of season prize giving in there back in the seventies, many times i have fished east tarbert with a severe hangover
  15. seen them when iwas down a run with the wife and son thats what got me thinking about bivving there ,especially with this weather
