One other thing. In some circumstances they can vibrate and cause a high pitched singing sound, particularly when under load on casting or playing a fish.

I have a 10' 4wt built on a Dancraft blank and ringed with Recoil single foot guides. It can sound like a beginners first go on a violin on occasions.

It seems I'm not the only one who thinks so
