A mixed Newbury weekend

Found myself with a spare afternoon Saturday so picked up my mate Sparky and off too Speen Moors we went.

Not exactly the best afternoon's fishing. After trotting maggot's for the best part of 2 hours at the bridge by the car park and along the river parallel with the field we had managed just 1 dace ( and no I didn't catch it!).

Then we wandered around with our spinning gear along the river to near Northcroft and back but still no luck. The river was up with the heavy rain we had

If anyone can point us in the right direction for some decent swims/sections of river to fish for chub we would be most grateful as we are having no luck at the minute.

Then I managed to sneak in an hour or so on the river Lambourn by Shaw church Sunday afternoon.

At last I managed to catch a fish again getting a nice Grayling of about half a pound and then a poundish Rainbow.

What a relief I can still catch fish. :D

Until next time..

Blimey another Newbury member - welcome - there's a few of us here on AN. The chub at Speen can be quite peripatetic - so you need to be too. Travel light and cover as much water as you can. Speen does reward those that put the effort in - all (OK tis only 3!) my 6lb+ chub have come from Speen - from 3 different swims and there's also som big perch to be found and some good bream which are VERY nomadic.

Welcome from me, too, as another Newbury angler, albeit very much a 'pleasure fisherman'.

Good to hear that you are interested in spinning, though I guess it's a tough time of year for spinning, even for chub. When I first came to Newbury 14 years ago I quickly discovered that the canal in summer was a great place for a newbie to lure fishing with lots of easy to catch perch. Then the number of boats increased and the water got more coloured (which affected the river everywhere, including Speen Moor). For some reason I've never had much luck spinning on the lakes, though that may be more of a comment on me than the lakes. On the river and canal I guess I've found that autumn after the boats have reduced (so the water has got clearer) but there's still some warmth in the water is the best bet, but there's a lot else to do then so I must admit I don't do much spinning at the moment.

Thank you for the warm welcome to AN.

I agree that this isn't the greatest time to be fishing as the going is hard but I am still thoroughly enjoying trying to catch.

Cheers for the info and maybe see you on the bank.

Thank you Chris.

I will continue to roam around and hunt for the elusive fish.

Either way I am loving traveling along the glorious river even though it has been a bit nippy!

Maybe see you around

Thanks

Nathan
