Pike on Fly

Sportsman

Recommended Posts

Interesting day today on a small Loch on Speyside. I was fishing for Pike with a mate, both fishing from the same boat He fished float fished deadbait with 2 rods. Total for day -1 missed run.

I fished fly on a slow sink line. Total for day - 6 pike biggest only about 9LB but all good sport on fly tackle.

Why would anyone fish for pike any other way?

Anyone want to buy any deadbaiting tackle? :)

Hi macdaddymac

If you have never fly fished before starting with casting a pike fly may not be the easiest way into it.

To cast what looks (and feels) like a dead budgie requires a heavy line, and that in turn requires a heavy rod, as rods are designed to cast a particular weight of line.

IMO you need at least a 10wt 9'6" to 10' rod matched to a reel which can hold a 10wt line and at least 50yds of 30lb backing.

For most of my pike fishing I use an old Hardy 10wt rod and a BFR lamina reel with floating and intermediate lines. My favourite being an Orvis 11 wt intermediate.

What you really need to do is meet up with someone who fly fishes and can show you what is what. If you ever fancy a trip to the Highland I would be pleased to take you out.

Regards

Dave
