Flyfishing after pike

10 weight rod..any big light reel will do. Floating line in coloured water or intermediate slime line in clear water. Fishing small rivers from a boat I like to use an 11 weight line, long casting from the bank..9 weight line. Leader is usually 6-8 feet of RIO hard saltwater mono to a small silver ring (used by carpies)Off the ring is a foot long trace of 20lb titanium wire to a small staylok clip. With flies this size there's no point in using tapered leaders.

9/10 wt medium action rod. W/F line to suit, many pike fly fishers prefer the type of line for salt water fishing, I use a salmon spey line.

I have tried lots of different leader set ups including very expensive woven steel covered braid.

I now use a very simple 8ft 18lb maxima and a 12 inch wire spinning trace, bought from the local tackle shop for less than a pound. Seems to work just as well as anything else.

Try it from a float tube, it's a blast

I would not recommend a nylon leader for pike, regardless of thickness Pike may bite through which means leaving a hook in the fish.

To make nylon bite proof it would have to be so thick that it would be almost rigid, and presentation would be worse. Wire is easier, presentation is better and it is much safer for the Pike.

I understand that in scandanavia it is common to use nylon as a leader for Pike whereas in this country we do not approve. I have heard of some individuals using a "hard" mono as a pike leader, as well as some forms of braid.

In my experience a good quality wire trace presents the fly better, is less visible to the pike and is much safer.

I have caught many pike on the fly and have never had a problem with using a wire trace.

In my opinion the wire trace is more important than the rod, reel, fly line or fly that you use.
