Grayling rod

Recommended Posts

With the Grayling season nearly on us, I'm looking for a new 5 wt rod. My current 5 wt is long in the tooth, but i'd just like to upgrade to something nice, light and usable. I like Daiwa, but any suggestions most welcome!

You know I've had a great time over the past year fishing for both trout and grayling. Last year I picked this 3-4 wt 7'6" rod up from cabelas along with a redington reel. I've caught trout up to 3 or 4 pounds countless grayling and the occasional chub. I'll tell you the grayling are a blast on light tackle. Incidently the rod at the moment is less than 40 quid.

Ever thought of building your own Dan?

You would get a lot more rod for your money that way.

Have certainly thought about it sportsman, but unfortunately I live in a flat, where space and drying space are limited. I also don't think a turning, whipping drying vice would go down too well!!!

I've actually just bought a rod - a 4/6 wt 8'6" Daiwa Lochmor. Should be perfect, as I really like daiwa (and lifetime warranty). I know they will never set the world alight, but a good rod all the same.

Never heard of Cabelas - are they ok? I tend to stick to what I know, what I've tried or reviewed rods in Trout and Salmon.

Nothing wrong with the Diawa. I've used plenty of them over the years and always been pleased with them.

Enjoy it, nice to see folk moving to lighter tackle :)

  • 2 weeks later...

I started getting a spot of tennis elbow so I bought a Greys GRX 4/5wt 8'6" to try and make life easier. I'm no brilliant caster but I've found it a lot more pleasurable to use than the heavier rods and playing trout and chub on it is great as it has a much softer action. I've yet to have a hook pull on it due to this.

Mind you, I wouldn't use it for my usual target of carp. Then it's back to the 6/7wt and the Nurofen gel!

I'd get that elbow sorted now, Whistlekiller. Mine led to me missing 18 months angling and irreperable damage (well, would be repairable by surgery) and I've now taken the precaution of living with a physioterrorist. Seriously, get treatment during the close season.
