Surface Fishing - Getting past the Rudd

JMW

Recommended Posts

I have joined a syndiate water and just did my first session this weekend (36 hours). I had a great time and cought 3 mirrors, 17lb, 15lb 2oz, 12lb 9oz, a 8lb common and a 4lb eel. It got really quiet during the day and you could see the fish near the Surface. I had some mixers and put some out, but the water is absolutly full of rudd, there must be hundreds of thousands, I even cought a few when landing a carp in my net. Every time you put mixers out the water bubbles with rudd nibling at them, how can I get past them to get to the carp? I know it can be a good surrface water as some guy got 2 twenties off the top the day before I got there.

Cheers

JMW it COULD work to your advantage, the bleak may attract the carp, they will scatter when one gets near,

Cheers Den, I will give it a go next time! I put out about 3/4kg of mixers during the day and didnt get any attention from the carp.

Try an artificial mixer on the hook.

I have caught using enterprise tackle fake biscuits, they also do a bread crust version.

JWM,

Its Darren here, we met on Saturday, you must be talking about the lake in Gloucester!!. Thousands of Rudd, cant believe it. I had about 6 in the net everytime i landed a carp!! I was talking to Tom who caught the 2 20lbers off the top, he stalked them, but he fed loads and loads of mixers, kept piling them in. If you fish double mixer on the hook, the rudd have a peck but soon sod off when the carp show up. He could tell when he was about to get a carp, coz the rudd cleared then he had a take. It went very quiet in the day there, i managed a 7lber and that was it, all my fish came at night, i hope it wont be like that all season! Sounds like you had a good session anyway, that dam wall is a hot spot i think. See you down there soon anyway, im going on sunday.

speak soon

Sounds just like a water I'm a member of.

The way I sorted it out is to just keep the bait going in without casting, the rudd bring in the carp and only cast when the carp are having it.

The other way I found was to fish quietly very close in, the rudd were not as much of a problem inches from the bank (this lake has deep margins)

I tried using the fake ones but without too much success, I might give the fake bread a go next time.
