windemere

A friend and I have been invited to use a chalet which is on the banks of Windemere at Whitecross Bay.

We have got access to use a dingy for the duration of our weekend there, so we fancy a spot of piking.

We are not familiar with the lake so we need tips on fishing from boats, safety and where to fish.

I would hope that the dingy in question comes with some kind of engine. Can enyone help?

Lures or bait? Echo sounder available or not?

And with a decent size lake (as this one appears to be), the fish will move around a good bit so the better locations depend very much on the season of the year and the specific conditions while you are there. On the good side, once you locate where the fish are biting on a particular day, you can usually find more in similar areas elsewhere.

Note: when the US/Canadian folk speak of 'Northern Pike', they mean the same fish as UK folk simply refer to as Pike.

Ahh. Thanks for that. I only saw a couple pictures of sections of the lake without much in the way of detail.

Are there any good topo maps showing bottom contour? If so, they would be worth their weight in gold for an angler looking to fish the lake.

Without an echo sounder it is very difficult to troll the shoreline as it can quickly go from 2ft to 30ft and vice versa and is hard to know what depth your lure is working.

White cross bay is a known pike hotspot so if you are there for just a wekend you might be better concetrating your efforts there by deadbaiting and chucking a few lures.

If you fish from the bank you don't often need to fish far out due to the quick drop off to deep water. Just make sure you cast far enought out to retrieve your baits over the ledge.

Regards,

Martin
