Mc or Mac

This question was triggered by Andy on another thread about the mispelling of his name does anyone know why there is this difference of spelling My wifes family name was McCartney my grandmothers was MacDonald :confused:

One is known as a Scottish spelling and the other Irish. I'm English, don't ask which is which!

 

I think 'Mac' is the Irish spelling.

 

What I do know is that 'Fitz' indicates the bastard son of....!

not strickly true i live in the highlands and as far as i know most are Mc eg McKay, McLean
