Have you seen this Monkfish?

Yes, nice fish. The TRUE monk fish or angel shark - not to be confused with the "monkfish" sold by fishmongers, which are anglerfish tails.

 

Just a word of warning if you should be fortunate enough to catch a monk - be very wary when you unhook it - they have protrusable jaws which shoot out to capture prey (l.s.doggies are favourite) and can shoot out to bite an unhooker's fingers. The teeth are strong enough and sharp enough to penetrate dogfish skin, so........

 

A mate of mine had a monkfish grab his hand - a tooth went through his finger nail and finger, so its not merely a theoretical danger.

Yeah, and they are one of the few fish that can bite their tails, so even if you pick 'em up by the tail they can still get you. I watched one crush a 1"diameter bamboo landing net handle once - from that moment on, I knew all I needed to know about monkfish.
